Tony, I just bought a Windows 8 pc when my XP picked up something that affected boot-up and "safe-node "!
This new "8" 's software means I must find a new office as my 2003 (cannot find disks" and "saved" 2000 MS Office will not load!) was not reloaded! So I hunt for an "affordable "( or free ") solution.
Also I find out they removed all installed games, (and "freecell" is not available at the "store)!
I wish for software that will work with my office data and I will have to dig out set-up disks on older third party "Bible" software and hope it works now!

Thank you for the reply, I have to pass on Libreoffice, the price is right but I have read some bad reviews of the product which make me skiddish to go that route. I have used office on two books and the third is in the works and I am not sure if the publisher would take it. Also I did create files for the others; i.e. Power P., Access, and excel! Just wondering did Libre. also have a "Outlook" type file for email as the techs copied my old email but I cannot read it!
    Thanks any way Dave

OpenOffice of LibreOffice don't come with any mail clients.

You can use Thunderbird as an excellent replacement for Outlook. You would have to import messages from Outlook.

In Windows world, MS Office is the [gold] standard against which all other office suites are measured. As expected, every other suite would fall short. It all depends on what you want to do. Here in India, even big pan Indian banks, commercial organisations etc. are using OpenOffice/LibreOffice without any problem.

thank you for your reply; I will have to look at Thunder. I agree Office is gold but with win 8 now set on this pc I am more paranoid than ever! I am never sure if my key strokes and searches are being reviewed even now. (inside and out) I read that a judge in wis. is using his office to get somebody to open files on his pc. I haven't searched all over yet but I know some sites "redirect" and they way "others" define definitions I consider religion a hot bottom topic! Do you know if "openo." will work with all "office" files? I have to go my publisher and check if they will accept openoffice. Dave

Tip: ALL products will have 'bad' reviews somewhere. No matter what it is, someone, somewhere is NOT going to like it. ;)

LibreOffice can import and export documents in several file formats; its native format is the OpenDocument Format (ODF). Formats it can read or write include those used by Microsoft Office, including the Office Open XML specification used in Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010, which use the .docx, .pptx and .xlsx extensions, as well as to the older file formats used in Microsoft Office 95 (read-only since LibreOffice 4.0) and 97-2003, which use .doc, .ppt and .xls extensions. It can also use Rich Text File format (.rtf) and OpenOffice.org XML format.

to rsinfo, Thank you... I did (timidly) download Thunderbird and after a few attempts trying passwords I was able to get emails from the server and that were saved to my desktop from outlook! Now I will sit back a second or two inhale and check out LibreOffice which Spywaredr suggested! Again Thanks Dave
P.s Early celebration the "archived" folders could not be opened, I do not know if there was a problem with TB or before with the transfer of data?
...PS 2 upon review with my wife, (and not having or accessing address book) we came to the conclusion that for us Outlook was "better" as we were both used to the "old outlook "!

By "archived" do you mean the emails imported from your Outlook or the "Archives" folder in Thunderbird ?

You said it. When you have been using a program for any length of time, you become used to it. Switching over to a new program takes time & effort.

I think if you need any more support, you should open a new thread in appropriate forum. This thread is for discussing Win 8 Blue.

to rsinfo you understand correctly, I was able to get "current mail" from the source but when I bought the Windows 8 the copied all my data from the old pc to folders created on the desktop. Tie "properties" of the folder note 418+mb and 20+ folders but when Thunderbird read them I was unable to open and read the older mail. I do not know if This is a Windows 8 problem or email only that now I cannot read them!
Ok here is a Windows 8 Question; the software is "preinstalled" on this pc, I would like to copy it out just in case a virus or bug gets through! I would like this to be or know that if something like the NSA decides to plant something that will eat the software, that I can reinstall the software with out having to buy it new from a software store! I should probably defer to those who know way more than I do ...

If you have preinstalled apps, and did not get a DVD as a backup medium, in the event something needs re-installation, then your stuff is probably on one of those 'hidden partitions' which show up as a D:\ drive, so the first CD/DVD is actually E:\ ...

Which usually means - and here I defer to others for a work-around - you cannot make a copy of the reinstall stuff, and put it on a DVD. But you can reinstall your entire, out-of-the-box configuration, if necessary, by running a utility from boot up or from within Windows 8.

And when did the NSA, or any other acronym agency, start planting things to eat your hard drive? Seems like a total waste of resources, unless you're on a specific type of list ... so if you are, I really don't want to know.;)

Please, folks, jump in here if I missed anything.

    Cheers!

No email client, to my limited knowledge, supports direct read of other email clients. You have to import the emails.

Please read through my earlier post #108 & start a new thread in appropriate forum.
