Then Microsoft may need to walk through the whole spectrum before seeing the rainbow.

Windows 8.anything is still far behind OS X 10.8.

It's time for Bill Gates to return & put some fire back into MS. Like Steve Jobs was to Apple, Bill Gates was the same to MS. He left his buddy, Steve Ballmer in good hands with the then upcoming Windows 7 release. How could Ballmer mess MS up this bad?

I know that Gates is probably worn down from making MS the powerhouse it is, the legal battles, however he can is a proven leader. Someone needs to go in, give Ballmer a swift kick in the rear & tell him to get some work done other than destroying furniture when he loses control. That's no sign of a leader, we shouldn't even be hearing these things.

In the fall of 2009, MS already on top of the world, they done it again with Windows 7. It's time to get that excitement generated again, hopefully by the next full release of Windows (around late 2015). In the meantime, MS must keep pusing it's popular products, even if that means getting the OEM's to release some Windows 7 systems. They did just that when Vista was released, XP computers were available until sometime in 2010/11.

Of course, they're still making plenty of cash on Windows 7/Office 2010 sales from 3rd parties such as Newegg, however that does the OEM's no good. If this Blue deal doesn't cause buyers to jump, MS cannot leave what was a hot seller off the shelves. In fact, Windows 8 never had to be introduced, RT was all that was needed for it's tablet market.

Just whose bright (sarcasm) idea was Windows 8 to begin with?

    Bring Back the Sparkle

    Right on the nose, Cat!

They need to find Brad Silverberg and bring him back. Or someone like him.

Brad was in charge of developing Win95, and was ready to retire when it came out. Bill Gates asked him to take over the fledgling Internet Explorer development. At that time, the guys from Netscape were figuratively kicking Bill G. in the rear end, making fun of his IE which, at the time, barely had 5% of the browser market. They insulted him in public, on interviews, no less.

Bill was pi$$ed, to say the least, and asked Brad Silverberg to bury Netscape.

Brad took the challenge and, the first full year after taking over, they had 20% of the market share. By the end of the third year, Netscape was a has-been - with the same 5% market share that IE originally had, and is now a footnote, only to techies.

And the best part is that Brad managed the right way. There are three ways to manage people: by fear, by love, and by respect. If you manage by Fear, you will never get the other two.

Brad managed by Love and Respect. His people would do anything for him.

Ballmer manages by fear and it shows. His teams get things done, but the creativity and the sparkle is long gone from Microsoft in general, and Windows to be specific.

I had the honor to meet Brad Silverberg at the launch party for Win95, as I had been one of their "inside 100" alpha/beta testers. (I'd gotten the first CD of Win 95 at the end of 1993, and the CD was marked Alpha! I think I still have that one, somewhere.) Win95 was the longest beta in which I'd ever participated!

So I got a ride down to Atlanta for the party, and met Brad. A good guy, with a solid following at Microsoft and, if he's still around, Bill Gates really ought to bring him back, to whip the company into shape again.

    Just my very humble opinion.

    Cheers!

Well, MS has made it known that Metro [or whatever they call the bloody thing] is the way of future and is not to be deprecated. Could be a way into the future if MS starts giving away *free* touch monitor with each copy of Win 8.

With Metro UI, Microsoft should change the brand of Windows into Window, without the "s ". Windows 8 is working like a retarded single-minded: one app at a time! Why some people like Android on SAMSUNG Galaxy S3 than an iPhone 5? You can run an app while working on another.

Can you run Windows 8 desktop with as much Windows as I need on an Windows Phone? Com'on, what's the point of having a Metro UI look on all Microsoft OSs.

Who will use the Metro UI on Windows Server 2012? Impractical, I wonder.

    Windows 8.1 or Blue = Windows 7 + 1.1 + keep the face.

The leathal problem of Metro UI is that it retards Windows from a multi-tasking Multi-windows Desktop to a single-task app based Metro UI "Home ".

Why is it happening? Microsoft's 2nd tier guys have great pressure to "change" by demolishing the past, but without new vision from the top. So, it's time, if not too late, to change CEO. No doubt.

The new training brochure is terribly frustrating all existing Windows users, I think!

    1) It is based on a touch screen and a tablet (Surface) with a keyboard (see Go back to the start.)

    2) It is a legacy pdf file, not interactive nor animated.

    3) Create groups requires 4 steps to do. The guide just shows you two. You can't do it by following the guide.

    4) It shows that Windows 8 Start Screen (the Metro UI) integrates in conflict in a virtualised environment. E.g. under Fursion 5 in a Mac. Windows 7 is much better.

    5) I don't want to go back to the Metro UI (the Start Screen) every time I open an app, e.g. Word, then Excel then PowerPoint. In Windows 7, I just click, click, click and all done!

    6) It's so annoying to Switch between apps in Windows 8. In Windows 7, I just need to move the mouse to a desired app's window and click, and it's done.

I just give up to read further!

I installed the latest Windows 8.1 build 9385 on my virtual machine.
This is the version which is suppose to go on preview on June 26th.
Still no Start button or any setting to boot straight to Desktop.

I don't know why people get 'excited' about a Start button. I'm assuming they are confusing a Start button with a Start Menu.

Yep. Clicking Windows 8.1's new Start Button while in the Desktop view, (see icon on the left below), will simply take the user back to the Metro Style (swinging tiles) Start Screen. :(

    A few comments

So, bottom line is ... Microsoft ain't a-gonna make any earth-shaking changes.

Cosmetic changes maybe, but not the ones that people have hoped for, like a Start Menu Button.

Arie had a little work-around I followed, which gave me a new menu on the Taskbar, way over on the left corner, and I had enough functionality to not miss the Start Menu, a la Win 7.

Unfortunately, when I did a "Refresh" with my Win 8 Pro which, BTW, made my system actually work so much better and quicker, that little work-around disappeared.

I'd love it if Arie would post those steps again, 'cause that's about all I need to not miss Win 7's Start Menu.

And back to the Refresh option: I'd never have believed that it would make much difference and, even though I knew most of my Apps would need re-installation, I wasn't really prepared for how it did its job.

But after about four days of rebuilding, post Refresh, I'm a believer (with apologies to The Monkees):)! I'd been lamenting my underpowered PC and now, no such problem.

Kudos to Arie! Microsoft ought to hire him and pay him Big Bucks to clean up their image, pun intended!

    Cheers!
    :D
