    Hi guys,

I'm thinking of changing my DVD Writer to a BD writer on my laptop.

One quick question, is it safe to assume that optical drives are standardised, ie no need to go to HP for the drive?

I'm not 100% sure, never having owned an HP laptop, but I think they are just standard SATA drives (could pull the existing drive out to check).

    Yes.
    Maybe.

No doubt the drives are standardized, the problem with all notebooks is notebooks are not standardized. Notebooks tend to have many proprietary parts in some attempt to make their notebooks standout.

It is likely the power can data cable connections will be standard. The problem, if there is one, will be physical (shape and dimensions) - that is, how drive fits, mounts or is physically installed in the notebook case.

Your best bet may be to get an external BluRay drive.

    Thanks all,

I'll play it safe and go for an external drive. I may have a wee peek at the DVD drive though and physically examine a BD drive at the local computer shop. :)
