Well, the printer driver uninstall/reinstall did not work. :-(

After an exhaustive search I found the following forum entry...
So, I returned the DEP setting back to original and all is good.! Of course, I am still at square one with the sluggish Windows post-logon bootup, but at least I am printing again!

Thanks for the screenshot. You can remove the following entries from startup as they are not needed.

    • NvCplDaemon
    • NvMediaCenter
    • Microsoft Office shortcut bar
    • Both Outlook Express setup programs

If you don't need Quicktime to startup with Windows then you can remove that item. You can start it manually.

Do you need PrintKey2000 to run on startup? If not then disable it.

Do you have any idea what Notifyplus is? If you don't need it on startup then you can remove that entry.

I don't know what the TraySantaCruz program is. Do you recognize it?

I don't know why you have a quick shutdown program installed on your system. The tweaks that I had you perform in step 11 already improved the speed of the shutdown process. If you don't need this program then uninstall it.

Sorry the screenshot was so hard to read.

I am still condsidering why the slowdown exists in relation to its recent appearance. All of these remaining start up items have been on the computer for years and years.

I'll nix the Nvidia and OE entries.

    Other programs:
    1. I use the Office Shortcut Bar a lot
    2. Quick Shutown is a small applet that shuts down XP in one click
    3. Print Key, I can remove from the start up group
    4. Notify is a calendar program, must start up with Windows to be useful
    5. Santa Cruz is my Turtle Beach PCI audio card's software

I will try to remove them from the start up list one at a time to establish their affect on the boot up time.

Please allow me to reiterate... the real slowdown occurs after all these other applets have loaded. The last thing to load is the internet connectivity (as indicated by the Landled applet) and that takes 20 seconds, with solid HDD activity continuing for 20-30 seconds after that. I hope that makes sense.

Also, since nothing makes much sense at the moment, the blue progress bar that marks the bootup of Windows at start up used to 8 rotations and now takes 11. Just can't figure this machine out.

Thanks for your help! Sorry that the machine is so contrary.

    It makes perfect sense.

    No problem.

I recently had to deal with a computer that was very slow and the only way that I was able to fix it was to run check disk on the harddrive which fixed the slowness of the machine.

I would run check disk on the harddrive to make sure that there aren't any corrupted sectors on the drive. Click Start< My Computer. Right click on the harddrive and click properties. The harddrive properties window will open. Click the Tools tab and under Error-checking click on the Check Now button. The Check Disk window will open. Select both Automatically fix file system errors checkbox and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors checkbox. Then click the Start button. Windows will ask you to schedule the disk check on the next system reboot. Go ahead and click Yes to do so. Now reboot the computer and allow check disk to run.

Have you updated your video driver and chipset driver to the latest versions?

I doubt it. I don't receive an error message when run from a non-admin command prompt.

For example, if you try to run powercfg energy fro a 'normal' command prompt you'll receive a message stating you'll need to execute that from an elevated command prompt.

    Larry,

Open a command prompt & run this command:

eventquery /FI "Type eq Error OR Type eq Warning" /L System > "%userprofile%\Desktop\sys_log.txt "

Open the sys_log.txt file on your desktop & copy/paste the events from the last 3 days in your next reply.

Arie Mr. Computer doesn't like that script. There is a message about running cscript.exe first. It did produce a sys_log.txt file but it is empty. I ran it again with cscript before eventquery but then the log file (only) said something about an invalid entry.

Evan- I ran checkdisc and little benefit. Sorry. The Windows progress bar did go down from 11 cycles to 10. You were right, it did take quite a while to complete.

Have you looked in Task Manager to see if there is any process that is using a high amount of CPU usage?

At this moment, only svhost is using anything.... 1%. Is there a better time to observe it?

Open Task Manager when you first boot up the computer and that will give you a better time as to whether a process is using a high amount of CPU usage or not.

Only Malwarebytes (as a separately identifiable program) seems to be very active at that time, exc for svchost. I took it of off start up and it did help some. Is there an easy way to script a delay into its starting yet keep it automatic with a Windows bootup?

I also just noticed that I have only 2Gb of RAM. I recall that unless I was crunching video, that the extra 2Gb would be a waste. Is that still the case?

It really depends on what you use your computer for. If your computer can handle 4 GB's of RAM then upgrading to more RAM will help with the performance of your system. You can use the Crucial System Scanner to see if your system can handle 4 GB's of RAM.

Ah, forgot that. Run this command first:

    cscript //h:cscript //s //nologo

Yes. You are running Windows XP which is only capable of addressing around 3.2 GB anyway (depending on your graphics card).

You have problems with our DNS servers, which accounts for the slow startup.

Change your DNS servers from 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2

You shouldn't use these (4.x.x.x) unless you re a Level-3 customer. The best reason why not is that Level 3 is under no obligation to provide this service to the public and there are several reports that they're trying to discourage people from using it.

Your ISP's DNS servers are the best choice for use as your DNS servers.

I changed back to the ELN DNS addresses. However, I will note that my ping rate with the 4.2.2.1 is 42ms, and with the ELN addresses it is 72ms. Real performance-wise, it is unchanged.

    I thought 4.2.2.1/2/3/4 were ATT opt-out servers.

So you still have something causing problems.

Can you copy/paste the full message of the error 7000 and warning 4226? Open Event Viewer, select System, double click on the error to open the properties & click the "Copy" button on the right, then paste the results in your next post.

The ATI looks looks like a video board reference but I don't have one.
