A friend brought to me a Dell Vostro 1000 Laptop running Win XP Home with a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated controller and Dell 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini Card. She said she was unable to connect wirelessly. I can get on the Internet wired but wirelessly no. My network found the device. When I start or restart the Wireless Icon balloon pops up saying network connections are detected. I updated the the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller and the Dell 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini Card drivers. Still will not connect. She continually brings the computer to her karaoke friend and all he does is reinstall the operating system. When I asked her how long as this been going on. Her reply was 30 to 40 reinstalls just in the last few months alone. The last time she brought it to me was a year and a half ago. So I do not know how many reinstalls were performed. I googled the problem found some answers but nothing has worked so far. Any ideas. I probably missed something really simple

The machine is 6yrs old. She asked me if it was worth the trouble. I told her unless she is willing to go to win 7. Which she said she would get a new laptop with win 7. She definately said no win 8. She helps her karaoke friend with his busness so I don't think there are many karaoke programs yet for win 8. Whats your opinion Doc. Also thanks. The first thing I told her was I thought it might be the card but I wanted to exhaust all possibilities.

Ordered that Mini adapter will let you know what happens. So I will leave this thread open until I receive the adapter and if thats not the problem at least I'll have the adapter to do future card testing. Thanks again Doc.

I have an old HP running XP and found the best way to use the Wi-Fi was to use an Ethernet Cable: one end to the router and the other to the HP.It works faster than my fancy Dell Vostro with Win 7 that connects wirelessly using a Trendnet 802.11/b/g/n adapter that I downloaded for free.I also have a Dell adapter that comes for free from the Dell site. Good luck.

She needs the wireless connection for when she brings it to shows. They don't use it that much but at least it's there for just in case situations.

The wireless mini adapter did not work. I don't know what her friend did. I checked the device manager there is no listing for Disk Drives but it is recognized in the BIOS. went into the Command Prompt to find the OS install date got back not recognized as an internal external command operable program or batch files. I might have to reinstall the OS.

    1. Get rid of any 3rd party wifi connection software that came with the broadcom or the usb adapters.

    2. Let Windows manage the wifi networks.

The Broadcom 10/100 Integrated Controller which is for wired connection(which is the only way it will let me connect). Deleted the Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card I still could not access the internet wirelessly with the Encore USB Mini Adapter. Windows found new hardware which was the Dell Mini-Card. The Device Manager shows that the Broadcom Card, Dell Mini-Card, and the Encore USB Mini-Adapter are working properly.

Sorry, I didn't realize you didn't know that the the Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card actually is a Broadcom adapter branded by Dell. Broadcom makes the 139x and 149x chipsets.

Anyway, ditch the Dell connection software. You must prevent it from loading at boot or uninstall it. This is not the drivers.

Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services and verify that Wireless Zero Config (end of list) is set to Automatic and Started.

Windows keeps detecting the Dell 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card. Deleted the Dell Mini-Card from the Device Manager and software from the control panel. Upon restart the Dell Mini-Card is listed again in the Device Manager under Network Adapters. In the systray(Notification Area) I get a balloon popup reading Windows Detected new hardware Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card. Set the Wireless Zero to Automatic Started. Still will not connect.

Open Control Panel > Network Connections >

right click the Dell wifi icon > select Properties >

put a checkmark at bottom 2 boxes >

double click Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) > Advanced button >

WINS tab > uncheck enable LMHosts > checkmark Enable Netbios over TCP/IP > OK button to close windows

At original Network properties window for wifi adapter click Wireless Connections tab > checkmark Use Windows to manage wifi connections.

If "Use Windows to manage..." is grayed out you will have to uninstall the Dell wifi connection software. Once "Use Windows to manage..." is enabled do:

Right click the Windows wifi icon in System Tray > View available wifi networks > try to connect to yours.

All earlier solutions presented in this thread are invalid, including the above, unless the computer has XP Service Pack 3 installed.

Thanks Doc and TonyT. TonyT followed you instructions in you above post. Also had little gitch in my network I unlocked the network but it didnt unlock. I thought had unlocked. Tried to unlock again still wouldnt unlock. I had to shut down the computers on the network, unplug the modem and router which reset them both. Then I was able to unlock the network and get the Vostro on line wirelessly. Doc great idea using the mini adapter worked like a charm.
