hey guys not sure where to post this, do I decided I'd post here.

My co-worker has an older laptop and it is confiugered in fat32. he has music on there and wants to transfer it to a vista computer. Is there away to do this? I know I turn the whole system to ntsf but will that delete the files?

    thanks as always,
    flyboy

Never had one do it yet. Probably done 50 or so from Fat to NTFS. My worry for your friend would be that his HD goes South and can't be revived and loose everything. It does happen, but just when is anybody's guess.

so using the pre installed converter shouldn't delete anything; just change the format?.. the only reason we're doing this is cause its so old he's finally upgrading...we tried just coping the files but get an error when I try to put them onto my ntsf hd

I'm not sure why it shows an error when trying to transfer!

I have transfered many music files from my NTFS Format PC to a Fat 32 pen drive and then from a FAT 32 pen drive back to an NTFS format PC.

I had a quick look on the net for this and found options for converting the whole disk but as always it said to be sure to back up all data, as it could not be converted back!

Files are files so can't you get them off on a USB drive, delete the partition and reformat to NTFS?

    Regards, Ian.

Ian I'm alittle lost by you last paragraph. you can copy a file to a usb drive .. and i didn't say anything about a partition.

Mr Bill can I format a usb drive to fat32?

Don't see a reason to use FAT32 on the drive. If you are only using it with Windows XP through Windows 7, they read/write NTFS just fine and this gets you over the 4GB max file size limitation of FAT32.

FAT 32 is used on USB drives because it takes up less room on the drive You can format a USB drive to whatever format, NTFS or other.

As said earlier I have read that you can convert the whole drive to another format and keep all your data but CDFS files cannot be converted and others, but a backup is recommended and assumed you would update the format on the old laptop!

A laptop is a laptop after all, even an old one in good order is worth a few quid.

Formatting a drive does lose all data unless it is unformatted before it is written on a fresh, so don't do it unless all data is backed up.

And sorry for the extra info but I tend to ramble late at night after a drink, I'm assuming again that maybe the old laptop is really old and doesn't have a USB port?

Does it have a CD writer? The files could be burnt to disk.

There is a converter to allow a 2.5" IDE drive to be plugged into a SATA port and read off the data directly to the other machine.

I have a USB one somewhere and have taken data off old laptop drives in the past.

Any way hope you get sorted, Regards Ian.

So basically this is the problem. You should post the *exact* error message.

ok for more information because now I've actually played with it my self.. its an older computer/laptop, it has a battery pack that's huge.. it does have usb ports.. the issue the is really having is that his music is m4a itunes format. the problem is itunes was removed.

he was thinking the format of the drive has stopped him from just coping and loading into another computer.

what I think I need to do now is install itunes and have itunes convert into mp3

That has nothing to do with converting from FAT to NTFS. You should make a different post about your problem. If I knew nothing about changing from FAT to NTFS, I would not even look at this thread and miss your problem.

Hi Arie hope you and yours are well.

Sorry for sticking my nose in but thats me and I get his problem now!

There's freesoft to convert apple files at CNET, maybe it's of use in this case?
    http://download.cnet.com/Free-M4a-to-MP3-Converter/3000-2140_4-187723.html

I just couldn't understand why he was having trouble getting the files transfered.

Hope you haven't been in any of that nasty weather, Sandy and all.

    Regards, Ian.
