My girlfriend I has an older modem/router from her ISP which has minimal range. She has trouble getting a reasonable signal from upstairs to the living room, directly below.

She purchased and used Belkin N300 router last winter in Florida when she was there because the ISP didn't offer a wireless modem/router.

When she powered up the Belkin she got a full signal from almost anywhere in the house so, I figured disable the wireless in the modem and connect the Belkin.

Problem is, when I attempt to log into the Belkin, the address (192.168.2.1) is the same as the ISP's modem (192.168.2.1) and I can only log into the ISP modem.

So I disconnected from the ISP modem network and was able to log into the Belkin (192.168.2.1). I thought, OK, change the LAN address and reboot the router. I changed it to 192.168.1.1 but then could not log into the Belkin at all. I had to do a factory reset to be able to log in again. I am thinking that there is something else I need to change.

Any advice would be appreciated here, thanks

Thanks, that did it Doc but I now have a new problem

Now when I disable the wireless on the modem and connect the router to the modem I can see the network (I gave it a different name) and can connect but there is no internet access.

I have this sort of setup in my home with the same ISP modem and a Dlink router and it works well for me

    She is running Win7 Pro

Always configure a wifi router using a wired connection.

Connect the Belkin directly to any computer using a wire. The comp must not be connected to the ISP modem/router by wire or by wifi.
Once the Belkin LAN IP has been changed to 192.168.2.2, you must do this:

    1. re-connect to the Belkin using its new IP address.
    2. set the Belkin gateway IP to 192.168.2.1
    3. set the Belkin DNS to 192.168.2.1
    4. disable any routing functions of the Belkin by disabling DHCP.
    5. disconnect comp from the Belkin
    6. connect the Belkin to the ISP modem/router by wire using a Belkin LAN port, do NOT use the Belkin WAN/Internet port.

That sets up the Belkin as just an access point/switch and lets the ISP modem/router handle addressing and DNS.

To do otherwise is to have 2 routers/2 DHCP servers and will cause conflicts.
