    Dear Sirs,

We have Active Directory Server installed in the office. The security policy takes away the Administrator right from each user accounts.

Now, they can't defragment files by themselves, unless I release the right to them each time when they want to do it. I'll take away the Administrator right after the job is done.

Is there a easy way to do it? Please kindly instruct. Thanks in advance.

    B. rgds,
    Peter Ho.

You must have Administrator privileges to defrag a volume, so no, AFAIK there's no easy way.

There is a slightly complicated way which would require you to log onto an admin account on any of the machines and set a scheduled task to run defrag.

    Dear Administrator Arie,

    Thank you for your instruction.

I went to the Task and tried to create a task to have a test. But I couldn't find the MS Defragment tool in the Wizard list. I clicked the Search button. I don't know the path to find the tool. Could you please kindly teach me. TKS.

Could you please kindly instruct me in the following items. Thanks.

    1. Whether it runs in the background?
    2. If so, what will happen in the following cases: Power outage, User shuts down his PC.

    Thank you in advance.

    B. rgds,
    Peter Ho.

That deals with defragmening the active directory database.

    Here's the work around:

    • Log on as local Administrator
    • Create a new scheduled task
    • Browse to C:\Windows\system32\defrag.exe
    • Schedule it once a month (or only once a year, not important)
    • Enter the password of the administrator account
    • Check the box Open advanced properties...., click Finish
    • When the advanced properties open, add the drive letter of the drive you want to defrag to the command line. For example if you want to defrag drive C the command (Run:) will look like this: C:\Windows\system32\defrag.exe C:
    • On Security tab, add the Users group (or Domain Users) with the following permissions:
      • Read & Execute
      • Read
      • Write
    • On Task tab, make sure that Run only if logged on is unchecked (should be by default)

When a user wants to defrag, they go to scheduled tasks and run the task. The only indication they get that it is running is the Status column in Task Scheduler will show Running, it won't even appear in Task Manager.

    Dear Administrator Arie,

Thank you for your instruction. I was off on Aug.10 (Fri).

This morning, I tried your instruction on my PC. The defragment ran for a few seconds. Then it stopped. It's a Japanese OS installed PC. I can't understand the log. I need to use another PC, which is a traditional Chinese OS installed, to have a test. But it's busy that I don't have time to start it. Please kindly wait for my further feed back. Sorry.

    B. rgds,
    Peter Ho.

    Dear Administrator Arie,

I created a test schedule task. It worked.

I'll ask my colleague to let me use his PC and make a test on his PC tomorrow. (Since it's 20:16 now. I need to check whether he is available tomorrow.) Please kindly wait for my further information. Thanks.

    B. rgds,
