Why is it that every time I try to open a picture (jpg, gif etc) in Microsoft Office Picture Manager, Windows tells me that it is setting up Microsoft Project 2007, takes an age and then finally opens the picture using Picture Manager?

Thank you SpywareDr but even doing this, which I've tried several times before, Project still gets configured. Weird.

By the way, it's Picture Manager that is the problem, not Picture Viewer ( I do have Windows Photo Viewer but it doesn't have the functionality of Picture Manager.)

Hi lordrayne. Right click on an image and select Open With< Choose Default Program. The Open With window will open. Under the Recommended Programs heading, select the Microsoft Office Picture Manager from the list of programs. Then make sure the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file checkbox is checked and then click on Ok.

Repeat those steps for the other picture file types that you want to change. Now any pictures that you double click on will open with Microsoft Picture Manager.

Hi Evan Omo - thank you for the tip but, no matter what I do to select Picture Manager as the default, windows decides to re-configure Project 2007 before opening Picture Manager.

There was a time when using "Open with" I found two (2) icons for Picture Manager - the lower one would respond correctly and the upper one would re-configure Project 2007.

Now I'm just back to one - the one that re-configures Project - maddening!

Look in the Program Files (X86)\Microsoft Office\Office12 folder (the 12 may be another number) for the file ois.exe. Double click it to run it.

If that opens Picture Manager without the problem, right click the file and either choose "Pin to Start Menu" or go to Send To...Desktop.

Once you have the shortcut made, you can right click it, left click Rename, type whatever name you like, press the Enter key.

Thank you Miz, that seems to work but I shall wait until after a couple of reboots before I start cheering - Microsoft programs can sometimes be weird!

Thanks to all for your help.

    Hi All You Good People,
I think I've found what was causing the problem. I have CCleaner on my laptop and under the applications tab, I found that Windows Picture Manager had a tick in the checkbox so that CCleaner would automatically wipe all the settings every time it ran.

Useful lesson to learn - be sure you know what a cleaner is going to clean before you run it; check every tab!

Thanks Miz, unfortunately the problem isn't fixed despite all our efforts so in future I shall use Nero PhotoSnap Viewer and put this down to another Microsoft undocumented feature!

Consider it closed and thanks to all.
