I am trying to migrate from OE to Windows Live. First week everything was fine. New Windows 7 64 bit pro machine accepted the imported files from OE backup file. But now, Live Mail is giving me a message when I click on a message "There was a problem opening this email" and I have to close that message and try again. So far it works but who needs to go through that again and again. I tried repairing Live Essentials, (a fix that was on google search) but that didn't repair it. It's still doing it. Someone else has suggested I change to Mozilla Thunderbird. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

That usually occurs if some part of the message is corrupted. Open the message, copy+paste the message body into a new message and send it to yourself.

It's happening on so many messages that I don't think that is the problem. Others seem to think it's a windows update problem that will eventually resolve itself. I have a new computer so have been doing lots of updates. The email usually opens after the first attempt. Just wondering if any others have seen this.

If you insist on trying to keep email on your computer, recommend dumping Windows Live Mail and installing a real email client, such as Mozilla Thunderbird (free) or Microsoft Outlook (not free).

I have WLM and it is a REAL e-mail program. It is a mixture or the old OE and Outlook. I know several other people who use it and never had a problem with it. I would not dump it for anything else. I also have a full version of Office on my PC's that have Outlook with them and I still use WLM.

The user prefers the live mail format because it resembles outlook express. The mail is in recognizable folders, unlike outlook which puts them all together with calendar and contacts into pst file. So still, does anyone have a fix for the live mail message? Besides repairing live essentials which I've already done. I guess I'll wait to see if there is any response to this before ending the thread. Because problem isn't solved.

This thread is not about whether or not WLM is a decent email client or not. To each his own, eh?

The issue with the message not opening are likely caused by the messages being corrupted. They most likely got patrtially corrupted during imporing into WLM.

When messages are imported, they get altered to conform to the mail client's software protocols and its functionalty. There's a lot more to a mail import than a mere copying of messages from their folder stores.

If I had the original Outlook Express mail folders, I'd try deleting all existing messages in WLM and then importing the OE folders again. And if no joy, I'd try a different client such as Thunderbird and test if importing fares any better.

No. It's not archived mail, it's new mail.

Outlook Express was buggy. Microsoft knew about many problems (reported by many MVPs) yet choose to never invest in fixing it.

WLM is much of the same. Many known bugs. Microsoft isn't interested in a free email client.

In that case, try Thunderbird (free) or Outlook (paid). A mail client that has issues opening new messages is not worth troubleshooting.

Re using Outlook. We have that. But the contacts are an issue. It has been previously used as an address book. The oe mail contacts are a shorter list and just names and email. How do I import the oe contacts without merging with the outlook contacts to use just for email? I couldn't figure this one out. Might be the best choice if I can figure it out.
