Hi! I am a self confessed stupid when it comes to computers and the thing is, I was issued a toshiba netbook for work. It was not new so it has its flaws. Problem started when I first used ms word. The system always crashes when I have a word file open. As in my netbook would hang and I would always end up restarting it manually. Eventually I learned that it was actually nfected by a virus and was recommended to install a new one. Well it was just yesterday so I haven't done it yet. Well today I was not using ms word but still my netbook runs slower as compared to when I got it a month ago. When I shut it down it took really long so when it finally did, it turn it on again so I could remove the existing ms word. But what happened was I was stuck to the black screen and it says operating system not found. I was shocked so I manually turned it off. When I turn it on again, I was now given the option of starting windows normally or start system restore(recommended). I chose start up normally, but what happened was it keeps on running in loops and I keep on coming back.to this option. After the 3rd attempt, I chose system restore. It runs for about 25 minutes and since I am not familiar with it, I thought it was taking too long so i forced shut it. I tried doing it again and it would run for an hour amd i would forc shut it again. After the 4th try, I yielded and just shut it. Now I am reading all these forums about how you should wait it out or don't stop the system restore. I am now scared, have I ruined the netbook? What can Ido to fix this? Is there a lasting damage to the netbook?

The most likely solution in a situation like this is a clean install of Windows.

Do you have the installation DVD or a Recovery DVD?

The use of either will wipe the drive of all data - I trust you have a current backup of your work files.

If you have an IT department seek their assistance.

How can I to clean Windows?

I have a back up. Either, the net book doesn't contain much files so I really don't mind. I don't have the installation DVD or a recovery DVD. Is there other way to clean the Windows since I can't open it and only to a point where it shows the system restore options and start Windows normally. Thanks!

Hi notatalltechie. I agree with Pete that I think a clean install of Windows will be the best solution to this problem since you can't even boot up the computer normally. See if you can barrow a Windows 7 DVD from a friend or family member if possible.

If thats not an option maybe you can try contacting the manufacturer of your netbook which in your case is toshiba and ask them if they will provide you with any recovery disks.

Does that NETbook even have a Disc drive built in? I don't think so. Never seen one with one built in. You would have to get a USB Disc Drive and have the BIOS set to boot from the USB.

I might end up doing this. BUt how am I supposed to work with this? I am or should I just have the experts deal with it? I just want to know in case it happens again.

According to the Manual for the NB305, page 3.13 the computer has a Recovery Partition and I assume that preinstalled software includes the operating system although this is not specifically stated.

Give it a go and if it does not work you will have to speak with your local experts.
