It is more of a cosmetic change to Desktop icons, can these arrows be safely removed? and what is required to carry out this task. Regards.

Sure. For Windows7, Google for the free Ultimate Windows Tweaker and download it. Has a quick and easy way of doing what you want and much more. Afterward, let us know what you think of it.

Scroll half way down the page directly under the dialog box and at the end of the line "Simply download the zip file, extract its contents and run click on Ultimate Windows Tweaker(its in blue letters). My apologies for not being more precise and for any inconvenience it may have caused you..

    Ditto.

I was curious and Googled the program and discovered my version was 2 generations out of date. I checked several of the listed sources and ran into the same confusion it sounds like you did. Most of them compounded the problem by including additional programs they made it too easy to mistakenly download. I eventually got what I wanted and loaded it.

Did you get your IE address sorted out?

I must apoligise to all concerned, as Arie pointed out, that I made same thread last March, but failed to make a note of this. I carried out the same procedure today by making an entry in the Registry. It certainly has removed the up arrows from Icons, but all icons are diplayed the same pattern, with caption of software reference. Each icons opens the proper software.
Prior to above, downloaded and installed the software FxVisor64 delete arrows icons, at final stage a caption displayed it was unable to finish instal.

I did the same thing clicked the wrong download. I used Arie's reccomendation on my HP Pavillion 2167sb Laptop. Ususally it is hard to get customizations to work on that one. HP Support used to call it the laptop from hell, but, Arie's suggesteion worked. I'm glad you got it sorted out.

Hi Ij50, Are your Desktop Icons displayed normally or as mine are all the same pattern --- square shape with three emblems? Quite honestly I can not remember how the icons without up arrows were displayed on my computer back in March. Certainly typed information carefully and checked before restarting computer.

    Start> type Regedit> Enter> type HKEY_Current_User> Software> Microsoft> Windows> CurrentVersion> Emplorer> Shell folder>NewKey type Shell Icons/29/Click 29> type d %SystemRoot%\System32\Shell32.dll,50 /f

Right click on command prompt then click on Run as administor type this line statement: REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /v 29 /d %SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,50 /f Enter. This will work on 64bit. I used it on my HP Laptop which is 64bit.

On March 19 you said this: "Thank you for help, Windows Ultimate Tweaker has solved my wishing to remove arrows in Desktop icons." (Quoted from the thread Arie's link leads to)

What's happened since then that you now have the arrows back?

If Ij50's suggestion doesn't work, care to try UWT again?

Hi Bobbo, my HP Presario CQ5115uk, suddenly became unoperating and required a "factory settings" and therefore all tweeks were removed including the desktop icons referred back to standard settings.

I removed recent Registry entry, apparently this did not work. I made a further download of UWT, this time installed properly. First download of UWT most probably was corrupted. All is now working satisfactory, my sincere thanks to all who kindly assisted. Regards BS.
