    Thank you Evan.

I restored the system to the earliest available, which was 18th of this month, but that didn't help. I came back to the latest restore point.

I went to the XP Clean Boot instructions. The "Guided" download wasn't available (come back later) so I used Method 2.
In Step 4, the last instruction in Method 2 was to clear the Load System Services box, a result of which being that I couldn't connect to the internet so I no way of telling if the problem had been resolved.

I suspect, though, that there is more which could or should have been done in Step 2. Is that correct?

If you are referring to Step 2 of Method 2 in the article then yes. Its basically telling you to disable all 3rd party services from loading on startup while keeping the default Windows Services intact. You really shouldn't need to go to Step 4 because that step involves disabling the built in Windows Services and that is not a good idea to do.

Just make sure you disable all startup items and 3rd party services only. Then test the issue and see if there is any difference.

Ok Evan, that's what I did. With everything except Windows Services disabled I still have the same problem.

I wonder if I should just wait until the next iteration of Flash is available to see if that's any better?

You could do that but if Flash Player was causing the audio stuttering then many more people would be having this problem.

I still think you should try updating your audio drivers. I've experienced audio stuttering on some of my clients computers and after updating the sound drivers the audio stuttering was gone. Its worth a shot.

I have tried to update the audio driver without success.

The system tells me that it can't find a version newer than the one already installed.

Just in case you can spot anything which might be relevant, when I go through Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices Properties, the deafult device (for playback and recording) in both Audio and Voice sections is C-Media Wave Device.

In the Hardware section it's listed as CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device. Double clicking on that and then selecting Driver, it gives the date as 27/11/2002 and the version as 5.12.1.643

Clicking on Update Driver, then enabling Yes, this time only, Next, selecting Install the software automatically, Next, the system declares that it could not find a better match ... than the ... currently installed.

I have done a search through Google and can't find anything newer myself.

Does your motherboard include integrated Audio?

Yes it does Evan. I bought a separate card quite a while ago for reasons which escape me now.

For the sake of completeness, in the Hardware section of Sounds and Audio Devices, in addition to CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device, the following are listed:

    the c.d. drive
    the d.v.d. drive
    Standard Game Port
    Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio drivers
    Media Control Devices
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Video Codecs

Try powering off your computer, and unplug the audio cable from your PCI sound card and plug it into the integrated audio on the motherboard. Then power on the system.

Once the system is powered on, install the latest driver for the integrated audio device. Download it from here, Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver.

Once the audio driver is installed reboot the computer and then see if you experience any more audio stuttering.

I've had the same problem for the last 3 days (it just started)
    after updating FlashPlayer and SpyBot.

I tried everything including going back to the previous version of FlashPlayer, with
    no luck..

I started looking on the SpyBot forums and a user there suggested I turn off "SDHelper"
and "TeaTimer" and see what happens..

For me, it worked my sound went back to normal.

The other thing he said to try, if that didn't work, was uninstall SpyBot, then reinstall it, but do
not immunize your system and don't use TeaTimer or SDHelper.

So maybe you could try either of those suggestions, they may help.

I have now removed the PCI audio card and installed the later AC'97 driver.

That has resulted in an almost complete cure. If I am very deliberate and rapidly move the mouse all over the place I get an occasional hiccup in the audio, and a little bit of picture jitter, on YouTube.

Thank you Evan and the other respondents for your help and time.

Adobe confirms problem with new Flash release

Adobe HAS now confirmed there is a problem with their new release that would cause these symptoms. They expect to release a corrected version within the next few weeks. See-

    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1026022?tstart=0 and

    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4498459#4498459

I've had the stuttering audio problem since installing the latest release of Flash. I haven't yet reverted to an old version, but will report back if/when I do (may just wait for the new release and use another machine temporarily).

In the meantime, thanks for all the helpful posts on this board.

Thank you FullDeck for this info. I'm doing fine with my manual roll back for now, described above. Just don't forget to disable auto udate.

Hi FullDeck, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Thanks for that bit of information. I wasn't aware that there was an issue caused by Flash Player. Hopefully for those users that are affected by this bug, Adobe will release an update soon.

    Adobe Flash rollback worked!

Thank YOU, firehouse, for pointing me in the direction of the Flash update. I rolled back to version 11.2.202.235 (as per Adobe's uninstall/reinstall instructions), and my audio is working fine again. Also, I disabled auto-update for now. Adobe mentioned they expect a corrected release in the next few weeks, so I'll watch for that and re-install then.

And thanks for the welcome, Evan Omo- this board has been a great help to me. Glad if I can give back.

    Not installing Flash 11.3.300.262

Hi, firehouse, et al. Adobe released a new Flash version today (11.3.300.262) but I didn't install it. The "Known Issues" comment on the release sounds like they haven't fixed the "audio distortion" problem yet. See-

    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/release-note/enduser-release-notes-11_3.html#main_Known_Issues

For now, my audio is fine with Version 11.2.202.235 (occasional slight stutter when scrolling, but nothing unbearable). So I'll keep waitin'!

What an astonishing state of affairs. I would have thought that audio distortion would be top of their "things to do" list.

Bit like a car manufacturer saying "we've solved the problem of the logo coming loose but haven't managed to stop the wheels falling off. "

Just to add some info that might be helpful to others - I noticed this same stuttering, jerky video and sound when using YouTube, etc. in Firefox, but only if/when I moved the mouse, scrolled within the window, or typed on the keyboard, or asked my computer to do anything else. My machine is fine, new, has plenty of memory and resources available. This only began to take place after the most recent Adobe Flash Player 11 update.

I found the advice on this page about uninstalling Adobe Flash (latest version which I had updated about a month ago) and then installing an older version of Adobe Flash.

I did this, and PROBLEM SOLVED. Something in the latest version is buggy and causing this issue. I have contacted the Adobe Flash debug group to inform them. I'm sure they're aware and hopefully are already working to fix the problem.

Just wanted to share this info about my experience and the resolution to the problem I was having.

And just FYI -- I did go ahead and update the older version of Adobe Flash I had installed, and the problem returned. Reversed the version, installed older version (10 point something) and the problem was again gone.

Still waiting.... foot tap, foot tap, foot tap

Thanks, Kloneranger- this info confirms that the new release Adobe is pushing out STILL has the problem. (I didn't do the install because of the "Known Issues" comment.)

Still waiting for them to fix that pesky little "wheels falling off" problem...
