I currently use a Del studio 1555 lap top pc with windows vista. A couple of weeks ago windows update stopped working and I’m unable to install updates. I followed several suggestions on support sites to resolve the issue with no luck. One site instructed to remove SP2 and re install. Bad move. Now I can’t reinstall SP2 and had to convert back to ie8 from ie9. Next I tried a program called reimage that indicated it could fix Windows installer issues along with many other issues. Bottom line it failed to fix the issue and I’m not sure what it did. Still waiting for response from reimage and have 15 pending updates.
    1. Are windows installer issue software or hardware issues?
    2. Prior to experiencing this issue I was considering upgrading to windows 7. Will my current Windows installer issues on Vista create problems for me in upgrading to Windows 7?

    Will appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks.

    1. Software

    2. Possibly.

Now lets see what we can find:

    • Click Start, and in the Start Search box on the start menu, type CMD, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (this will get you an elevation prompt for an Administrator command prompt).
    • At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter.
    • Next type cat /dev/null > %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log then press Enter (ignore the error that 'cat' isn't recognised... it still does what it is supposed to do).
    • Lastly type net start wuauserv, then press Enter.
    • Now repeat the action that normally leads to the Windows Update error.
    • Once completed, enter %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in the Start Search box on the start menu and copy/paste the contents of the file in your next post.

    First try this:

    • Click Start, and in the Start Search box on the start menu, type CMD, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (this will get you an elevation prompt for an Administrator command prompt).
    • At the command prompt, type msiexec /regserver

See if that solves the problem of failing installations.

    Arie,

AS suggested I followed the steps in the article with the following results.

Method 1. The status of the Office Source Engine Services startup type was already set to Manual.

Method 2. I was unable to locate the Ose.exe file to make the suggested repair.

Method 3. I was unable to remove and reinstall Office 2003 due to the following error message. (uninstall did not complete successfully.)

This issue has me stumped. Usually I can figure these things out. I have been cautious in what I try as this is my business computer. Fortunately all my files are backed up on line.

Did you check the location \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Source Engine\? Does the folder exist?

I would use the FixIt solution posted in this article to remove Office 2003: How to troubleshoot problems when you install or uninstall programs on a Windows-based computer

    Now I'm in big trouble.

    #1 \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Source Engine (could not locate).

    # 2 Using the link was sucessful in removing Office 2003>

But cannot reinstall Office 2003 and have lost ie 8 function and many other functions including my disk drive which I needed to reinstall Office 2003.

After removing Office 2003 and rebooting I receive the following message. (gfxui.exe stopped working). I have no idea what I could have done to expand this issue.

    Any thoughts woud be appreciated

Your system looks quite 'broken' to me.

The gfxui.exe error could be related to .NET framework, and suggestions for fixing that include removing all .NET and reinstalling it.

In your case I'd probably opt for a complete rebuild, i.e. format & reinstall. Either from scratch, or from a backup from a time things were still working OK.

    Arie,

I think you are right. I do appreciate the support of you and Mattman. I can usually figure thes things out on my own and or with the support of this group. It all started with what appears to be a windows installer update issue and went from there.

I'd also check the health of the hard drive....

    Arie,

So I gave up, purchased new hard drive and windows 7 full package. Thought I would be back in business. No Luck. I removed the old hard drive, installed the new one. Loaded the windows 7 disk it ran for a while and then i get an error message "Boot Manager is missing ". Any thoughts.

    Thanks,

    Bob

This might help explain it, but I don't think it is the same problem:
Error message when you start Windows Vista: "The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information "

If you didn't get into Windows, I would just start again and reformat the partition.

I am wondering about the size of the new HDD. Is it much bigger than the old one? If so, I would make the partition somewhat bigger than the old HDD, but not the whole HDD. If the installation worked, I would make another partition (or two) in the unused space. For example, if your old HDD was 200GB and your new drive 750GB or 1TB, I would make a partition of around 350GB to start with.

If you keep having problems, see if there are alternate settings for the Sata Controller in the BIOS.

    Matt

There's another thing.... just getting a new hard drive was not what I suggested.

I suggested you tested your existing hard drive first. You do this by running the software from the manufacturer.

    Arie,

I know that is not what you suggested. I was just tired of dealing with the issue and thought this was an easier way to go. Just a poor decision.

I would still run a check: you see, some of these programs can also tell you if something is wrong with the cabling or bus.

Which is what I would expect now, a cable or motherboard problem.
