    Hi members,

Helping friends with their new Broadband installation & new modem last night.

Connected the modem using the Power adapter, telephone line and ethernet cable.

Typed in the modem's (Netcomm) IP address and did not get the login screen to get into the modem to set it up for their chosen broadband.

After checking everything, we connected the modem to their laptop, and everything worked fine. Was able to configure their internet settings and everyone was happy. They had Wifi internet, with nice fast speeds.

However, I connected the modem again to their desktop via the ethernet cable and again nothing. Tried resetting Windows, the modem, but still no luck.

I went back and forth between the desktop and their laptop and each time the laptop would work fine but the desktop would not connect.

I can only think the Network adapter (NIC) port is faulty. It is integrated with the motherboard.

I know NIC cards are quite cheap and mentioned for them to go and buy a new card, but just wanted to run it by you guys, just in case I am missing something.

Does it sound very likely that the NIC port is faulty????

Sorry one thing I did forget to check was "Device Manager ".

Do check Device Manager for any warning - if the port has not been used before the driver may not have been loaded as suggested above.

You could try uninstalling the Network Adaptor via Device Manager and rebooting to allow Windows to reinstall it.

If neither of the above work the onboard network adaptor or port may be faulty, but also consider the CAT cable - this may also be faulty. Try an alternative cable if you have one.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

    Will try all those suggestions.

As for the CAT cable, its fine, as I tried it 3 times on the laptop and it worked fine. Each time i switched backed to the desktop I could not get a connection.

Other than uninstalling and checking the port via "Device Manager ", to me it seems a faulty NIC port.

    Cheers

I'd also suggest you contact the ISP and check if they register the NIC's MAC address. Some do that, so if they have recorded the laptop's NIC address you won't be able to conmnect with another MAC address.

...unless you turn off the modem completely by removing its power supply, then start it again and connect the other computer. Sometimes a modem re-set is required.

Can try that also, however, whenever i plugged it into the Laptop it worked fine.

Plug it into the Desktop and I couldn't even get it to connect when typing in 192.168.1.1 to access the routers login screen.

I repeated the swap between the Desktop and Laptop 3 times, and success on the laptop each time, unsuccessful on the desktop every time.

When you do that, what is your IP address?

updating the drivers would really help.
after that you try commanding ipconfig /all in the command prompt.
that will confirm the configuration of the your NIC

Have you checked that the NIC is enabled in BIOS?

Is it showing in Device Manager?

    If yes, then:

Click Start and type cmd in the search box and hit enter.
In the command prompt that appears, type ipconfig as shown in the image.
You will get a display similar to the image shown listing all your network connections.
You are interested in the entry I have highlighted with yellow.

Can you tell us what you see when you bring up the ipconfig.

    Hi Guys,

Yeah I did run a 'ipconfig' and all looked ok from that side.

Was the 2 nights ago and checked "Device Manager" and that looked fine also, nothing unusual.

Anyway my friend went out and bought a standard $10 network card, plugged it in, and the computer is working great of the new card.

I tried to run it with the original onboard (mobo) adapter again, but no good.. I didn't try to re-install the drivers as it was working fine with the new card and I was happy to just close it up.

Thanks for all of your helpful advice.
