Hi guys, this is a problem that many has complained about but,it has plagued me now for several months.
The cd/dvd drive is missing from the machine. I have removed the upper and lower filters and it came back
for a couple of days then went missing again,I have tryed the device manager search for hardware
method but,it will not see it. In the device manager there is no cd/dvd drive listed there at all.
I also can install my dvd drive into my wifes laptop and it sees it so its not the drive itself.
When I open it and put in a disk it spins up like it is going to load but never does.
I also reloaded windows vista "clean install" and all it did was give me the filters back.

OS: vista home premium service pack 2
    Make: HP Pavilion dv9500
    model: dv9620us
    ram: 4 gigs
    hard drive: 320 gigs
    dvd/cd drive: sony optiarc AD-7561A dvd/cd rewritable

I have thought about upgrading to windows7 but not if my dvd drive isnt going be fixed.

Any and all suggestions, comments or questions welcome

    Thank you in advance

    Jim

Bad cable to MOBO would be the first thing I would suspect. It did work right at one time right?

    CAn you boot off a self-bootable CD/DVD?

I'd try to boot off a CD/DVD when you first turn on the Laptop. That will help you to deteremine if it is a hardware or OS problem.

Im sorry I should have mentioned that I did try both the microsoft and the fix on the other thread but still the problem persists but I noticed this time it has disappeared in the BIOS so Im starting to believe that maybe I have a problem with my motherboard but I dont know how to test for it.

JimmyMac - Sorry but looks to me like you need a new PC.

Short of replacing the MotherBoard, you need a new PC. If you're still under Warrantee call the company to get Warantee service. If you're out of warrantee, you could check to see if you can get a new Mobo from someplace maybe even the OEM if you feel competant enough to try the replacement yourself. Try www.pricewatch.com or newegg.com.

    Good luck,
    R
