    PSU: colorsit 500w
    mobo: MSI K9A2 Neo
    RAM:OCZ Platinum Ed ddr2 pc-6400 2x2gb
    HDD:WD 320gb
    CPU: AMD am2 6000+ 3.06ghz
    OS:none

just put these components together for a friend today as his pc blew up this is just a makeshift machine till he has the money for a better one, so i put this together using parts that i had lying around, thing is, it dont start, all i get is the PSU fan spin a little and a light from one of the cooling fans for a split second. So i swapped out PSU swapped and RAM for pc2 5300 2gb and still nothing.
As the fans move im guessing the PSU is ok and maybe the the mobo is U/S
    what do you guys think?

Spacers missing from under the MOBO screws causing it to short out and not start?

Hi TatenDaOne. In addition to checking the spacers under the motherboard screws, check all hardware connections and cables and make sure everything is plugged in properly and seated securely.

Also is the case power button cable plugged in correctly onto the right motherboard pins?

Is there any power going to the motherboard?

hi bill all spacers are accounted for, i have even placed fibrous washers between mobo and spacer
hi evan i spent more time trying to diagnose the problem than what it took me too build it i pull it apart and rebuilt several times overs making sure all plug and connectors are securely placed and correctly connected.
as far as i am aware there is power to the mobo,as i don't have a multimeter i cant say for sure
hi doc all components are treated with extreme care as if they were made from thin glass and i always use an antistatic wrist band when building machines atm i am gonna try another CPU in it as my friend from work has very generously lent me one i will post results when it is done

If I were you, I'd get myself a PSU tester on ebay. They're only a few quid and you'll have it for testing other PSUs later on. Its a lot easier to plug a PSU into a tester and check a row of LEDs than start fiddling with a meter. Yes, i know that a meter will be more accurate but the tester is a whole lot easier. 2nd reason for getting a tester is that the PSU will run when its plugged into a tester as the tester will put a load on it. (At least my tester does :) ). This will also prove the PSU clear of the MOBO.

Alternatively, take the PSU to a known working PC and swap it out and prove the PSU that way.

Assuming you've now done what's been suggested above by the others.........

Once you know that the PSU is good, unplug everything that's not absolutely necessary for booting as far as BIOS. That means unplugging the keyboard, mouse, and hard drive. Also unplug any extra PCI expansion cards.

Now switch it on, if there's any life at all, you'll get at least the fans spinning and probably POST beeps complaining that nothing's connected. If you get life, start adding components till it dies again. If you don't get life, then the MOBO's goosed.

I know that what I've outlined above is pretty drastic action, but it seems to me that you're at the stage of kill or cure. At least thats how I'd approach this scenario...

Did you use Artic Silver or some other stuff when you did the processor/heatsink? If so, to much or not enough?

    Possible solution

I have the same motherboard, and it refuses to startup if I have any of these USB devices connected:

    Epson 1280 printer
    Epson scanner
    Graphisoft USB protection key

If any of these devices are connected, I get power for about 3 seconds, one short beep, and then restart. Repeat.

Unplug these devices, I get the "restarted too many times" error, and then I can boot normally. After boot, I can connect the devices, and all is good.

    Try unplugging all USB devices.

I've already suggested taking the setup to the bare minimum and disconnecting everything to see if there's any life at all and we haven't heard back.

    Yes, we need some feedback.

My contribution would be...is the CPU compatible with the motherboard?

Replacing the CPU would be the last thing to try at this point since you have exhausted all other troubleshooting steps. Hopefully by replacing the CPU you will be able to power on the system.

My next step would be to take the motherboard out. Put it onto a sheet of cardboard with just the basic hardware attached and test run it there.

new CPU in an still absolutely squat, zilch nothing so my next step is now to do what matt has suggested and try it out the case

let you know what happens shortly

i have layed the motherboard on an antistatic mobo bag and it fired up and the cpu fan started i plugged in the GFX card to see the display and nothing, so luckily i have another card plugged that and its running sweet

the gfx card was the problem, GRRRR i hate computers
thanks to every one for their input i couldnt have done it without you
