A computer I am working on defrags up to about 75% then returns back to 1% and starts over again, I have left it for over 8 hours thinking it may finish.
(Some drive details, 74GB (80), used 23 GB, free 51 GB)
The PC seems to work ok, but would like to defrag it completly.

PS to Admin team. Thanks for Birthday Wishes yesterday 28th. another year older !!!!!.

Not sure what the problem is. Back in the days of 98, and even XP, I'd have to shut down everything or else it wouldn't continue. Now, I just use Auslogics disk defrag; it does it all, regardless of what is running (I think most defraggers on Vista and 7 do that), and does it fast. I'd recommend getting that one.

Try defragging from Safe Mode, less apps running in the background.

Hi Spanner. I agree with Paul and John. There obviously is a reason that the Windows defrag utility can't defrag some files on the harddrive properly so thats why the process starts over. It could be due to programs in the background interfering with the defrag process or the types of files that the program is attempting to defrag.

Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag. Make sure to uncheck any toolbars in the installtion wizard as they are not needed. After the installation finishes, open the program. When you open the program click on Settings< Defrag Priority and select High Priority. Then click on Settings< Program Settings< Algorithms Tab. Select the Delete temporary files before defragmenting checkbox and select the Move system files to the beginning on the disk checkbox. When done click Ok to close the Settings window. When you are ready to start the defragmentation process select the small down arrow next to the word Defrag and select Defrag and Optimize. The process could take a long time so please be patient. Download it from here, Auslogics Disk Defrag.

Thanks Paul, John & Evan, will give the Defrag from Safe Mode a try first as it could be easier to pass on to our over 50's computer forum, I think ?.
But will also try Auslogics on another pc and see how that turns out.
    Will let you know results.
    Thanks again.
    Spanner.

Defrag sorted, followed defrag in Safe Mode suggestion, worked fine, took about 3 hours, class pleased with that, another bit of info I can brag about knowing. Thanks to all.
Will try Auslogics on another pc I am looking at, nice to have alternative back-up.
MrBill, what do you mean by 'nasty on there calling home also, ?interested to know.
Thanks again to all, will mark this 'Resolved' when I have had a response from MrBill and done the Auslogics defrag.

Glad to hear the good news.

I gotta say, tho, that Auslogics would defrag 23 gigs in a matter of minutes (if the length of time to finish is important to you), so try it out and see.

Some p2p program that may be on there. You might not realize you have one as it got picked up by a drive by. Trip to the Malware section will tell real quick.

Thats great that you were able to get your issue resolved. Adding to what Paul stated, one of the reasons why I use Auslogics Disk Defrag is due to how much faster its defrag process is compared to the standard Windows defrag utility. Hopefully when you try the program out, it will meet your expectations.
