When composing an email, is there any way to change the info in the "FROM" box? I wanted to just change it so that when someone gets an email from me it will just show my first name instead of my first and last name.

I tested sending an email to myself and in the FROM column it shows my first and last name when received.

I checked out my Account Settings and the one line I changed insisted on my entire email address which includes my first and last name.

    Thanks.

Forging the senders address is often simple (not too sure how to do it with TB though) but also extremely frowned upon. If you don't want the receiver to know your full name create another account, there are plenty of free one's available.

Personally I'd be asking if I don't want them to know my name why am I emailing them?

I just thought it would be a simple thing to do.

I recently noticed that a friends emails were now saying G. instead of her entire name.

She has a Mac laptop and I have no idea what email client she uses.

Not worth me setting up an additional account.

    Thanks.

If you really need to do this, simply add another acccount which is a clone of the main account you want to use (ie server settings are identical) except that in the Account Settings screen where it shows your name, change it to whatever you want and use that account to send the email.

What its actually looking for is a valid email address or more correctly the correct syntax. If you need to cloak your "Return Address" field, enter a dummy email address eg a@b.com. However, once you start going down this route you end up triggering filters and as Wildfire stated earlier this practice is frowned upon and does your crediblility no good at all.

It's perfectly understandable that one might not wish the recipient of one's email to know his/her full name. Not everyone to whom we send emails are necessarily close to us and the circumstances of emails vary.

In my situation, I use my ISP's email for my family and close friends only and I use Thunderbird and SeaMonkey both of which use my full name. However, in the case of acquaintances online and others, I use webmail accounts (i.e. Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail) and for those I do not use my full name. In some cases I use a "handle" and in others I use my first name only.

So my answer for your question would be: take out a webmail account(s) for those situations in which you do not want your full name disclosed.

Well, I don't REALLY need to do this. Just thought I'd rather see only my first name out there.:)

I understand that - which is why I explained how it can be done. :)

And there is also the alternative method suggested by leushino.

Whether you implement either method is entirely up to you. :D

    Regards,

    Don

Thanks for all the info. Decided it's not worth all the trouble.

That wouldn't help anyway with all the spam I've been getting lately anyway. Terrible.

Go to Account Settings, click the name of the account, there should be a line: Your Name. Change it there.

I had already tried that and even just did again. Doesn't do what I wanted.

    Thanks.

OK, to clarify you're not changing your email address (so recipients would still have your full name anyway -as you've stated that's part of your address), you can't change your email address without setting up a new account.

It's my understanding that if you are in your recipients contact list then the old contact details would show on their system (I could be wrong or clients may differ) so for example if you sent an email from "Joe Bloggs" joebloggs@.... previously to someone and they added you to their contact list then sending as "Joe" joebloggs@... will still show up as from "Joe Bloggs" in their client.

Frankly, if you're not willing to try any of the suggestions (all of which are relatively easy and with little effort) then why waste our time? We've tried to help you in good faith and all you can say is: it's too much effort, I can't be bothered? I don't understand that sort of attitude. I'm sorry to be so blunt but this is very off-putting.

Sorry if my attitude bothers you. I wanted to do a simple thing and have enough irons in the fire and simply chose not to bother with it.

There are folks who do not chose to try all alternatives.

    Have a good day!!

Well... in truth it could not have been simpler had you bothered to follow the very, very simple directions given. And you would have had "enough irons in the fire" but the truth is more evident with every post: "you simply chose not to bother." Please... consider carefully the next time you ask for advice. Folks here volunteer their time to help others. If you really can't be bothered trying anything since it might require a few moments of your time (and by your own words that appears to be the case) then by all means... don't bother wasting ours.

My suggestion above indeed does do what I said it does. It is that setting for Your Name: which determines the name used in the FROM: field in composed messages.

In the screenshot attachments below you can see that changing the Your Name field is reflected in the compose window.

The only thing that would seem to prevent this from occurring is if you have yourself in your address book with your full name.

Then, I would check the address book, and delete the item.

Just a thought, would account "Manage Identities..." be of any assistance.

As I stated earlier, Tony's on the right track Westside but removing yourself from recipient's address book's isn't really an option.

    Tony,

I think you're right. It does seem to have something to do with the email address thing. I deleted my email address from another account I have, changed my Account Settings in TB and that seemed to do the trick.

    Thanks to you and Westside.

But I will also have to check with some of my friends. If they have my current email with the full name in there I doubt it will work?

The one friend who now shows up as just G. when I receive an email from her, left for Florida and I will have to email and ask her how she accomplished that. But I know she doesn't use TB and I have HER full name in my address book.

    Just a little confusing.

Well... I'm glad things worked out for you (really... I am). Sometimes all it takes is a little time and risk-taking to accomplish things. Besides, I learned something as well from Tony. :)
