    Broni,

    To respond to your checklist,

My Windows Updates are all current.

    I didn't note any trojans.

I've been using WOT for over a year and I follow its recommendations strictly.

I run Malwarebytes' AntiMalware and SuperAntiSpyware every time I suspect something is wrong, and so far they haven't found anything but adware.

I use the Secunia online scanner about every other week and update as recommended.

I use Software Informer to keep my programs up to date. BUT I don't download the updated programs from them. My Avast! anti-virus has flagged a number of their downloads. So I go to the developers' sites for the updates.

I always select "Custom " installation, and I uncheck any possible foistware like toolbars etc., and I don't click the "Next" button without looking at everything on every page.

I'll read How did I get infected? at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html . Thanks for the tip!

Well, my computer is doing well except in two respects. It still does not do what I started this and another thread to try to accomplish:

    1. to be able to run sfc /scannow
    2. to be able to click and drag mp3s from a Windows Explorer window into Audacity and Windows Media Player.

Those two things are still unavailable, so, after the thorough procedures that you've just guided me through, I must conclude that they were not caused by malware but by some other underlying problem.

I've brought both of these problems up on this BBS before, and neither was solved, so it appears that the only way to fix them will be to do an in-place "upgrade" restore.

Would you agree? Thank you. :)

    Frank

In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean :)
Because the access to malware forum is very limited, your best option is to create new topic about your current issue, at Windows section.
    You'll get more attention.

    Broni,

I've asked Arie in a PM to allow me to proceed with my original thread, which addressed the dragging and dropping of the MP3s, since it is still a problem and no longer appears to be related to malware.

I appreciate your attention and hard work, directing me in running all these procedures and tests and rooting out the bad stuff. I'll try to keep things cleaner in the future. Thank you!

    Frank
