I cannot get an acceptable volume level using a microphone.
I have used TEST HARDWARE in CONTROL PANEL>SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES>VOICE>VOICE RECORDING but even with the microphone virtually inside my mouth and me shouting I can only just hear my voice from the speakers. I have ALL volume sliders at the top (highest).
And during the test the 'graph' only lights up the first 2 or 3 sectors (nowhere near the top).
    Surely this is not right.
I have tried TWO different microphones.
The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-G41MT-S2P (almost new) and the sound is via onboard VIA VT2011 (VIA HD).
I do have the microphone plugged into the correct socket (colored pink).

I use Google talk and a couple of other programs and they work well. I can't hear myself thru my speakers. What would you want to hear your self for anyways?

I wasn't trying to be funny!
This all started when I found that others in TEAMSPEAK 3 could not hear me.
So I decided to TEST HARDWARE and during this test you need to speak into the microphone to check the 'levels' the next test it echos what you said through the speakers (I guess so you can check that what you speak is actually being 'received'. That is why I wanted to hear what I said - not funny! It seems you didn't read my post fully.

All you told me was that your system works - you didn't give me any ideas what could be wrong or what I could try changing!

I know how you feel, I have had some very frustrating hours setting up Skype Video no problem, but Sound, most times it is a simple setting somewhere in the Audio setup.
Have you tried with Skype, you make a test call, just to hear yourself, as the other person will hear you.

I have (sort of) solved my problem.
When using TEAMSPEAK 3 somehow the input device had changed to 'Default'.
I changed that back to the VIA HD Microphone and that fixed the Teamspeak problem (others can now hear me).
I still cannot get 'test hardware' microphone setting to be any higher (louder) than near the 'bottom' of the volume level.

Anyway as the reason for the initial post has now been solved I will close this post.

BTW I recently install ed a new video card (AMD Radeon HD 6770) and for some strange reason (to me) it also installed audio drivers. I found that most strange as I was installing a VIDEO card or an sudio card.
Any thoughts (anyone) why this happened?

    Thanks

Because these hight-end video cards usually include audio. In your case:

    • Integrated HD audio controller
      • Output protected high bit rate 7.1 channel surround sound over HDMI or DisplayPort with no additional cables required
      • Supports AC-3, AAC, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats

AMD Radeonâ„¢ HD 6770 Graphics specs

I never tested anything. I just plugged and played using Google Talk, MSN Messenger and a couple of other ones from a long time ago I don't remember what they were. I never tested anything like you did. I know that when I use Google Talk, I can see the MIC indicator move in the program if I don't have it minimized. I didn't even know you could do what you did.

    Thanks Arie,
I never knew that video cards could also support audio as well (I guess the audio comes 'out' via the HDMI port? I have learnt something new (actually hardly a day goes past when I don't discover/learn something new probably part of the speed at which hardware and software is 'evolving'.
I an attempt to solve the problem in 'test hardware' I uninstalled the audio drivers for the video card (I only ever use headphones anyway on that PC).

I am getting very acceptable mike levels in TeamSpeak (it also has a test mode with a moving graph which goes to the middle (0db?) as I speak without the mike inside my mouth and me shouting and other (TeamSpeak) members can now hear me easily as well.

LOL on the MIC in your mouth. Glad you got it fixed.
And you are right. We usually all learn something new everyday.
