I was having problems with the IE 8 installed on laptop, and downloaded IE 9. The program will not load and I now cannot access internet with the computer.

Let me first preface this by saying the computer has been displaying messages that the "hard disk is about to fail" and to "back up files, take computer to Toshiba representative for disk replacement ". I've continued to use the computer on limited basis - (since I have another one) - but now, several programs are not loading and/or prompting messages that program "is not responding ".

The frequent display of "Internet Explorer is not responding" is the reason that I downloaded IE 9. Now, when I try to open IE, some type of message flashes on the screen for a fraction of a second and the program does not run. I've tried to re-install the downloaded softward (saved on HD) but get a message that "the installed program is a newer version that the one I am trying to install ". (This seems strange since it is the same one.) I've tried to see about 'uninstalling' the IE 9, but none of the other suggestions found on other web sites have helped. So, I'm stuck with a laptop that cannot access the internet.

As I mentioned, several other failures appear to be occurring with this unit. When I try "system restore" - I get a message that 'no restore points have been established' ... even though I used this feature just a week or so ago with no problem.

Perhaps this problem with IE is just the "tip of the iceberg" ... and the HD is about to fail and the computer will be of no further use, as it is. If however, I can remedy this (ie, IE access), it will enable me to get a little more use out of it before either investing more $$ / or sending it to the junk yard. (Note: I live overseas and repair options / costs are not always the same as in the USA and other parts of the world.)

If someone can help with guidance on how to remove the IE9 that "won't load" ... I'll appreciate it. (I assume that once I remove the IE9, the previously installed IE 8 will be accessible ??)

    Details on the laptop are:

    Toshiba Satellite A505-S6980
Win 7, Home Premium 64 bit
    Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 @ 2.2 GHz
    4GB DDR2 RAM, 500 GB HD

    Hard Drive: Toshiba MK5055GSX, TI102782W0E

If this thread is better placed in another section, feel free to relocate it.

    Thanks in advance,

Go into control panel/programs and see what version it says is loaded. If you uninstall IE 8 or 9 from there it will revert back to the previous version.

Under "details ", it shows "product version: 9.00.8112.16421

Any suggestion as to how I can remove this version ... and hope that it reverts back to 8.0 ??

As explained previously, the program will not start. A "flash" of some type of message appears for a fraction of a second and disappears.

I've tried to investigate this some more ... and see that the "name" of the IE in the program list is : "C:\ Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe "

Perhaps this indicates that the problem is that I've erroneous somehow installed the 86 bit version rather than the 64 bit program?

(FYI, I initially tried to installed the 86 bit version - through my ignorance - but got a message that it could not be installed. I then downloaded the 64 bit version and the download seemed to go through OK. Maybe somehow I got stuck with a partially installed 86 bit version .. and this is the source of the problem ???) Anyway, it looks like I need to find a way to remove this program.

    Any comments will be appreciated.

Yes, I read post #2. I don't see how to "uninstall" from the program menu. Right clicking on mouse takes me to 'properties' and option to revert to previous version .... but under 'previous version', it says there is no previous version installed. I don't see 'uninstall' from "properties ".

Perhaps you can give me more instructions as to how to uninstall it ?

When you hover the mouse over it, watch near the top of the box. It will say uninstall right next organize.

You have more serious & important problem of hard disk to look into before troubleshooting any Windows/IE problem.

Your hard disk may have bad sectors. Doing anything on such hard disk is fraught with danger. Follow the recommended action - "back up files, take computer to Toshiba representative for disk replacement ".

Hi fantasma. I also agree with rsinfo on this issue. If you harddrive is close to failing completely then there really is no point in trying to troubleshoot your IE9 issue. Your harddrive could crash tomorrow and then you really could be SOL.

I would backup any personal data on the labtop and then get the harddrive replaced before doing anything else IMO.

Yea, I agree that trying to fix anything on this hardware is a waste of time. You should first fix the more serious issue of failing hardware.

OK. Thanks for all the input. I'll have to evaluate if it's worth the cost of repairing or not. (I'm guessing it will cost at least 50% of price of 'new computer with similar features' just to repair this one ... which is over 2 years old.) Living overseas complicates the repairs.

Thanks again. You can close this thread.

Replacing the hard drive can be done quite easy. The same HD as you have now costs around $90 from Amazon, and if Amazon doesn't ship to where you are now, I'm sure you have a friend that can send it for you. Shipping won't cost $50 so for $120-$140 you'll be done.

No idea what a 500GB laptop HD would sell for where you are now.

There is no right clicking involved. Just hover the mouse over the program you want to uninstall (in this case IE) and then it will list uninstall near the top.
