My apologies. I missed the earlier post for this problem.

Recently had to replace my dead Westell 7500 wireless router/modem with an ASUS DSL-N10 combo and have a problem connecting via the Broadband Connection. The wireless is working with no problems but when I try to connect via the Broadband Connection I get "Error 651 - the modem has reported an error." I use the broadband to get better buffering for videos. The broadband was always able to connect with the Westell. I'm assuming the problem could be with the new modem. I've googled the error but nothing I found helped.

What's the status of your problem?

Same problem. I commented to you on the earlier post I missed. Here it is:

"I have the same error 651 with a modem I used to replace the Verizon Westell 7500 router/modem combo. Oddly enough, the 7500 did in fact successfully connect via the WAN wired ethernet connection. In my experience and maybe it was my imagination, it improved buffering for videos. The ASUS DSL-N10 used to replace the Westell can't make the wired connection. I suspect that the problem, if one could call it that, is the difference in the modem setup settings between the two modems. I've googled and searched many forums but there simply isn't a fix but, as you mentioned, maybe one should not be connecting via a WAN miniport with Verizon DSL. Could connecting via WAN cause problems? "

If you are using a DSL modem with Verizon that was not sold to you by Verizon, you must do the following:

    1. Access the modem control panel via the Web browser. (probably 192.168.1.1)

    2. Call Verizon support to get from them the modem settings that are needed. (If I remember correctly, you will have to set the VPI/VCI to 0/35)

    3. Use the computers LAN connection, not a miniport adapter.

Note: You cannot use just any DSL modem with Verizon, there are only a half dozen brands that will work with their DSL service. (not all DSL services use the same protocol settings and not all DSL modems support all of those settings)

Also, when you speak with Verizon support, ask them which modems are supported, they have a list.

The best performance for Verizon DSL is to use their Westel 6100 or 2200 modem in Bridged Mode in conjunction with a separate wifi router. The Actiontec and Westel DSL wifi modems are low end junk hardware.

    Tony,

Thanks for the advice. Your reply woke me up to the fact that I was incorrectly assuming that I had to use a broadband connection to get improved video buffering. I finally realized that the LAN connection I had via the router accomplished what I wanted. To confirm this, I disconnected the wireless and was still connected to the internet and could surf via the LAN connection. Turns out I had a non-problem. I did dump he Verizon modem for a new "N" unit to complement a new wi-fi TV. Thanks again.
