With the (relative) popularity of the Apple iPad and with various other PC makers tablet style devices we thought it'd be interesting to see how our visitors think about these devices, and if they plan to purchase one (or already have).

Personally, I don't have one, but I'm waiting to see what a tab running on Windows 8 would be like.

    Rooted Color Nook

I have a color Nook that I'm going to root using a third party rom. (Not on the list.)

I was going to wait for Christmas and surprise the wife, but I think I'm going to go ahead now so I can see if it's OK for our needs. (Casual users.) I also want to be able to evaluate against the slew of new tablets that are coming out and the BF/holiday season deals.

I don't have a tablet PC and I don't really care for them. My mom has an Apple iPad but I find its more of a luxury item than anything.

If I want to browse the Internet or play online games I'll do it on my desktop PC. I haven't gotten used to the touch screen technology yet and IMO using a Tablet PC isn't really necessary unless you are traveling somewhere so I won't be using or needing a Tablet PC anytime soon.

I have a kindle, which I love. I have had a loan of an iPad2 and find that useful on occasion, they are not what I would call anything other than a toy. For my money I can find better and more useful ways of spending it.

I have 4 desktops and 2 laptops but no tablet.

I am planning to purchase one for the wife for Christmas. She can carry it with her and keep me informed if I have important emails as this will be a business purchase. As I understand it can also be used as an EBook reader. This way she can preview any PDFs I create before I distribute them to others.

I'm not expecting this to replace her current business machine but something she can take with her easier than a laptop.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Kermit

Having a desktop and a laptop I am looking at a tablet to use either as an eReader or in the car. Using a laptop in the car whilst mobile, has problems due to the space taken up by the keyboard and the difficulty of handling the device physically in a confined space. As most of my mapping programs are designed for windows the choice of OS will also have some impact on my selection.

Laptop, Desktop and smartphone is enough for me. I honestly don't see the need for a tablet.

I have an iPhone (3G) and an old style table - Nokia n800.
The Nokia 5" has a small 3/4" touch screen, comes with a stylus, wireless, camera, headphones and does a very nice job when needed. Its on screen keyboard is actually much nicer then the one on my iPhone. It takes up little room when traveling and I have used it for at least the past 4 years on the original battery.
Use it or iPhone when out somewhere and only want minimal internet access or to get my email. The rest of the time my netbook and desktop work just fine. One family member swears by the iPad 2, but he is easily enamoured of all the hype.
No plans for an iPad or any other tablet.

I haven't even made it to a lap-top for myself, though DW has an ASUS netbook. I don't care for touch screens, or for looking down at a table-top screen.

When my current desk-top unit dies, I'll probably go for a high-end lap-top

Absolutely. I bought an ipad2 for my wife and she loves it. It's ideal for her recipes and her magazine subscriptions. And it proved perfect for our recent vacation to Hawaii. I've asked for the Amazon Fire for Christmas (can't wait). We still have our desktops and a laptop that we share but the tablet is a device that simply fills in the gaps being much more portable than the laptop. With my Kindle Fire I'll have the content Amazon has to offer at my finger tips. I'm already a Prime member so that will also play into what will be available to me. Oh... and we both have Windows Phones 7 but reading my subscriptions to my favorite newspapers and magazines will be so much easier now.
