I have IE8 and XP Pro. For a while now, I often, but not always, have an issue with using the Open in New Window menu choice or the Cntl+N keystroke to open a new browser. Nothing happens. No yellow info ribbon at the top of the window, nothing. If I use a desktop IE shortcut, I will often get a little flash of the screen but nothing results from it. But again, not always. My computer is very clean and I have tried turning off the IE8 Pop Up Blocker, but to no avail. Any ideas??? Thx

I'd guess it could have somethig to do with the coding of the site your on when you do Ctrl + N... Do you have a specific example of a site where that doesn't work?

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for the reply.

I just turned on the computer and everything works great. When these issues arise, it happens to every website and all three functions stop working (Open in New Window, Cnrl+N and the IE Shortcut). For that reason, I tend to think that am looking at an internal issue, not external. Only rebooting will set things right.

I have tried turning off all Add-Ons, but, also, to no benefit.

With an intermittent problem like that, I can only suggest trying to:

    1. Reset Internet Explorer (Internet Options > Advanced > Reset)
    2. Run sfc /scannow
    3. Do an XP repair

It might be worth your time to consider changing browsers. I got frustrated with IE for inconsistent performance, read forums and followed advice, and finally gave up and changed to Google Chrome. I love it. It is stable and fast.

Sorry for the dealyed response, just swamped at work.

I will try those suggestions this weekend Arie. I would hate to dump IE, but could as a last resort. Lastly, this has been going on for weeks and weeks so I think that a System Restore is not possible.

Arie, what could I "lose" if I run an XP Repair or the IE Reset?

Based on the symptoms, could Java or a Windows Update be at issue here? I have already run JavaRa to get rid of older versions of that.

    Thanks, Larry

Yes, and a System Restore to back before those updates would let you know.

    Create a Restore point.
Do a System Restore to way back.
Test to see if the problems been solved.
If not, restore your latest Restore point.
If it was, might be a good time to backup (image) your system.
