I have a laptop, Thinkpad T60 running XPPro SP2 which I bought a year ago and had no problems to connect by Wifi to my broadband connection. The internal network adapter is: Intel PRO/WIRELESS 3945ABG Network Connecter.
I have just bought a Thinkpad T43 with same OS and and : Intel PRO/WIRELESS 2915 ABG Network Connector however after 10 days trying to get connected to my broadband connection, I am at a loss as to what I can do now to connect.
The problem is definitely not the router but specific to either the T43 and/or the installed network adapter. When I bought the machine, the machine did connect to the seller’s broadband we no problem.
    Your guidance would be appreciated.
    TIA

    1. Uninstall the Intel connection software bundled with that adapter.

    2. Download & install XP Service Pack 3.

    3. Go to Control Panel > Network Connections > right click the wifi adapter > select Properties > uninstall QoS > double click TCP/IP Internet > Advanced button > WINS tab > uncheck use LMHosts > put a check next to use netbios over TCP/IP > OK out of dialogs.

    4. disable any IBM/Lenovo wifi connection software if exixts.

    5. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > set Wireless Zero to automatic and started.

    6. reboot.

    Intel Wifi

Hi Tony and thank you for your suggestions. Sorry for delay in reply, I have been away.
I have gone through your detailed suggestions a number of times just in case I had missed something and after rebooting I always get the message "Unable to connect to Livebox-B440" probably a network problem rather than PC ".
Do you have any suggestions how I can get round this problem, I have a Lenovo T60 with Intel wifi which works perfectly but the T43 will not connect.
    regards

Is Livebox-B440 the name of your wireless LAN (as specified in the access point)?

I think that I may have identified part of the problem. It seems that when I reboot, although I have "uninstalled" the Intel PRO wireless adapter, indevice manager it seems to still keep re-installing. How can I stop it from doing that?

No, that's not the problem. The adapter is necessary. What's not necessary is any Intel connection software. If it exists, it will be in add-remove programs.

    Hello,

I have found the intel programes on ‘Add and remove programmes’ but there is no option shown to ‘remove’ only to ‘change’ so I then loaded Revo Uninstaller and managed to remove the Intel program.
Re-ran all the steps listed in your message. On clicking the connection button I get ‘Windows network connection 4’ and it shows ‘Livebox-b440’ with a gold star top right and the power bars at maximum but ‘still get ‘unable to connect on Internet Explorer. When I run the IE diagnostic get message, possible network problem. As I can connect wirelessly with my Lenovo T60, I suspect that some sort of setup problem is causing the problem. My initial thought was a possible problem with the PC wifi hardware but I have already seen it working fine on another network.
Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

EUREKA!! After having done all the suggested changes I decided to have a careful fiddle with the router setup on 192.168.1.1 and I got as far as de-activating the MAC filter and suddenly I was on line. I was a bit worried about making changes but with the luck of the stupid, I seem to have chosen the right one without causing any permanent damage.
    Thanks for your help.
    Problem Solved!

First of all there is a more current Lenovo driver for the driver than even the intel driver

    http://bit.ly/tnwm9N

secondly for some reason the windows xp wireless utility has this odd quirk of assigning "provides key automatically "
    You want that unchecked
Do that by creating a profile manually and unchecking that box
or you can modify it by saying security is wep, entering a wep code temporarily and then turning off that switch
You can then go in and set it as a wpa with the switch off
Also for some odd reason with the drivers only its erratic on log on
Install with full utility rather than drivers

    http://bit.ly/tnwm9N

Lastly have you tried to log on wireless in a separate area
Its not out that question that you have wireless interference drifting in preventing logon
