On a Sony laptop running XP PRO SP3 and automatic updates is in effect 9 (I had hidden the IE update as I have always used SeaMonkey) I run Malwarebytes and Kaspersky 2012 and keep both up to date. I tried to install Microsoft Office 2007 after uninstalling Office 2003 trial that came on the laptop and also uninstalled McAfee and installed Kaspersky. I get an error that some registry keys can not be opened. I have tried to install running as Administer but the same -- it will not install in Safe Mode saying can not install this program in Safe Mode, The IE installs (IE 7 or IE 8) is the same, I currently have IE 6.+ installed. Any ideas? :( I have all current window updates and run the Genuine Windows Validator and all is well. I purchased the laptop new 3 years ago.

Don't ask me for a quick reply because I am off on holidays.

Look at which user profile you are using. Try making a new administrator user and running the installations from that. I wonder if your administrator profile is corrupted.

I have tried 3 different administrator accounts but to no avail.I had Registry Mechanic a couple of years ago and ran it several times. Never noticed any blurps installing anything until now. I had shut off the IE update a long time ago as I never used it but kept the security for IE 6 current.
    Thanks for the reply

Let's first check if we can get a more precise error.

Go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

Post the last 100 - or so - lines from this log in your next reply.

I have not tried installing the dll files from my netbook allowed the installs but looking in the add/remove programs I notice the I have 5 entries for the MSXML and only 2 on the other machine -both running XP. On my Sony the file is attached.

I wouldn't worry about the inconsistencies between the two computers. Just focus on reinstalling the XML parser and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Did try to replace the XML parser but same results. Maybe a complete restore to factory new but everything else is working-I probably removed an entry that I shouldn't have with the Registry Cleaner, my bad. Thanks anyway for all the help.

 Yikes that isn't good. I wouldn't be surprised if running a Registry Cleaner caused that problem in the first place. Which Registry Cleaner did you use? Did you back up the registry before you started deleting entries?

Registry Cleaners are NOT to be used lightly especially for routine maintenance on your system. You really should ONLY use them IF you have a corrupted program installation that you can't uninstall or reinstall and you need to remove all traces of a program completely in order to reinstall a particular program. Even then you need to pay attention to what keys you are removing and not just let a Registry Cleaner delete whatever entries it finds.

Anyway do you have a Windows XP CD handy or only recovery CD's?

I use Revo Uninstaller Pro and Registry Mechanic but it could of happened over the past couple of years so I would not know which backup or what programs have been installed or updates have occurred since. I have the recovery DVDs that came with the computer and the files on the HHD that were installed in the I386 folder. Sony does not supply a Windows CD.

If you do the factory restore all of your data will be wiped out on your harddrive and your system will be restored back to when you first got the computer. If you do the recovery make sure to back up your data first.

Would it be possible to get a Windows XP CD from a friend or relative? If you get a Windows XP CD you can perform a repair install which wouldn't wipe out all of your data but would repair the existing Windows installation.
