Hello guy and gals, I have a HP dv9620 us with vista home premium, and with all the complaints that I have read about the machine and Vista itself I have not had any major problems with it and I love it but now I have got a problem with it I cannot figure out.
The CD/DVD drive has gone missing and will not work,I have read and tried many fixes to no avail including the removal of the upper filters in the registry,I normally do not touch the registry but I'm at my wits end. A strange thing is the lower filter does not exist in my registry and when I tried to delete the upper filter it just tells me there is an error that has occurred and cannot perform action,I have removed the drive and tried it in another machine and it works just fine,it will open and load the disk but then it just stops,it is not listed in Device manager and under storage controllers I have a yellow!,it just says unknown device and when i try to install the driver it just says either insert disk or show where the driver is.One other thing the CD drive is listed in the Bios section and still is missing in safe mode. Please Help Thanks Jim

    Hi Jim. Try this fix.

Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Notepad. Once Notepad is opened copy and paste the following code into notepad:

When you save the file in notepad you should see three input boxes. You need to save the file with the following attributes otherwise it won't work.

    1. Filename: fixcd.reg
    2. Save as type: All Files
    3. Encoding: ANSI

After its saved then go to the directory where you saved the file and double click on the .reg file. Click Yes when asked to merge the file in the registry. Reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.

I think you missed step 2 above Jimmy, if you don't change the filetype to all files then the file will be saved as fixcd.reg.txt, ie a text document not a registry document.

I tried several different remedies in an attempt to restore my CD-DVD drive - deleting upper/lower filters in the regestry, looking for the drive in the Device Mgr, etc. Nothing worked. This worked, and was by far the easiest fix. Thank you so much for alleviating all my frustration in trying to find the right fix for this problem.

    "LowerFilters "=-
