Recently my web pages have started to move up and down in a wave-like manner, rather than smoothly as is normal. My system is working fast and very efficiently at the moment so I can still read and see what I want. However, the jerky scrolling is irritating to the eyes.

I use Outlook Express for my emails and if I'm reading a long one I find this wave-like motion there also.

When I run Google Earth I also get a slower response with its graphics and a pop-up box tells me that I'm running Google Earth in OpenGL with software emulator. It suggests upgrading my graphics card driver.

When I view photos on Facebook there is a momentary pause before the picture is rendered.

I went into the System Device Manager and noticed that the are yellow question marks beside (1) Video Controller (2) Video Controller (VGA Compatible). When I click 'update a driver' it fails to get any update. I think the problem indicated by these yellow marks might be because I deleted them (or something in device Manager) in a recent effort to solve another problem. Apparently I didn't follow up and reinstall them. The dreaded newbie strikes again!

There are no other yellow question marks beside anything else.

In a system profile I printed a while back it says that my 'Display' is as follows:

    256MB ATI Radeon (Display adapter)
256MB ATI Radeon Secondary (Display Adaptor)
    SndTVideo (Display adapter)
    DELL 1907FP (Monitor)

Might the first and the second items above be the items missing from Video Controller & Video Controller (VGA Compatible)?

I'm completely lacking in graphics card knowledge, so if anyone could suggest a remedy for the wave-like scrolling I (and my eyes) would appreciate it.

    Many thanks. :)

Hi Lugwalker. Since you uninstalled your graphics adapter you already know that you have to reinstall it in order to solve the wavy scrolling in webpages.

Chances are you probably are running the ATI Radeon X1300 since that GPU comes integrated with that particular Dell model and it also has 256 MB of graphics memory.

Download and install the video driver from here, ATI Catalyst Drivers 9.3 XP.

Thanks, Evan. I downloaded and installed ATI Catalyst Drivers 9.3 XP and re-booted. Alas, the wavy scrolling is still there.

I see that there's a latest version (11.8) on offer. Should I have used that one? Would it make any difference do you think?

By the way, the yellow question marks beside (1) Video Controller (2) Video Controller (VGA Compatible) on system>hardware>device manager are still there.

Well the only other thing that I can suggest is that you uninstall all ATI software from Add/Remove Programs, reboot the computer and then install the 9.3 drivers again.

By the way the 11.8 drivers won't work on your video card. The 9.3 version was the last version that supported the ATI Radeon X Series.

The attached may give you an idea of my setup.

Is there any ATI software here, Even, which I should uninstall before installing the 9.3 drivers again?

What is the significance of the yellow question marks in Other Devices?

Thanks for the info. This situation looks exactly the same as if you hadn't installed your video drivers at all. It seems that the drivers weren't properly installed.

Since you have revo uninstaller installed on the machine, use that program to remove all of the ATI software and make sure you remove any remnants of files left behind by the installer. Also delete any registry keys that revo finds for the ATI drivers. After that process is completed reboot the computer and do a search for any other ATI files that are on the computer. If any ATI files or folders are still present delete them.

After thats finished run Disk Cleanup (Start< All Programs< Acessories< System Tools< Disk Cleanup) Make sure all the checkboxes are selected and then click on Ok to remove any temporary files.

Once thats finished download the 9.3 ATI driver and install it. Hopefully it will install properly without any problems.

Did you install the chipset drivers from Dell?

I've been installing and uninstalling so much of late that I can't remember. Is there a way that I might know if I have?

I'm looking for ATI software to uninstall in order to follow your suggestion, Evan. I can't seem to see any on Revo uninstaller. Can you tell me if you see any in the attached, please? Thanks.

The AMD Catalyst Install Manager is the software that you want to remove. Make sure you right cick on the program and click Uninstall NOT Remove Entry.

Just download and install the chipset drivers from the link I gave you in the other thread. It should let you know if it was already installed. Without it the controller drivers will not be installed and this may be causing your graphics drivers to fail.

I would say no. A wizard normally has to be run.

These are the instructions from Dell:

Could you tell me what I might type into the search box after the removal of the AMD Catalyst Install Manager to see if there are any remnants of ATI software, please?

    Success! :D

I followed the procedure suggested by Evan in post #7 on page 1 and everything is now normal. No more wavy-scrolling pages.

I uninstalled the AMD Catalyst Install Manager which was on my system and rebooted. I then ran Windows Disk Clean and CCleaner, and installed the ATI Catalyst Drivers 9.3 XP. Problem solved!

Along the way many of you have offered important advice on procedures with which I was unfamiliar, so many thanks to you all for sharing your knowledge and experience with me. It was much appreciated. :)
