My daughter called me from college today and had a question about her laptop. She has a Dell that is just over a year old. After charging the battery, she says the finished product says 95% instead of the 100% she is used to. I told her to not worry about it and that batteries gradually lose capacity over time. I told her I would post this question here to see if I really knew what I was talking about!

So, does she have anything to worry about with this laptop?

    Thanks.

Normal behaviour, Batteries will lose capacity over time.

96% after a year+, nothing to worry about.

Some laptops including Dell have a program that will drain the battery 100% then tell you to charge it back. Has she tried this?

For older NiCad's MrBill, I wouldn't recommend draining a LiIon completely (they don't have a battery memory but don't like being fully discharged). Bucksone, before you try draining 100% confirm the type of battery.

The poster said it was a little over a year old. That should rule out your theory. Yes? No?

Many Dell laptops have a utility in the bios to recalibarate batteries. Other Dells come with a software program to do it.

My old Dell 1200 and my new Gateway both have the program to do this. Came with them on them.

It sounds like 95% is nothing to worry about, so I'll tell her to not worry about it and worry about things like homework, tests, etc.

    Thanks for the responses.
