I am using a wireless laser mouse. It works fine. I hate the touch pad and I can't turn it off. The main problem is the "tapping" feature. When I inadvertently brush the touch pad, it makes the computer do something that I definitely don't want it to do. This is a major nuisance. I have tried everything, including uninstalling the driver, but it keeps coming back. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite L550 running Windows 7 Professional.

I have a Toshiba Satlellite T210. The process for turning off/on the touch pad is:

FN key + F9, then click on icon to enable/disable. Should be the same for your computer.

Same on my C660 (FN+F9), it can also be disabled in the BIOS (Advanced->System Configuration->Internal Pointing Device (enabled/disabled))

    FN+F9 doesn't work

I never noticed the symbol on the F9 key or I would have figured that out ages ago, HOWEVER, FN+F9 doesn't work, so it looks like I have another problem. Any advice on that?

Do any of the FN key combinations work?

A strange one, have you looked in the BIOS for setting I mentioned earlier?

    FN+F9 doesn't work

I'm thinking I have the wrong or a corrupted driver due to uiniinstalling and reinstalling the driver. When that happened, I actually lost a capability to disable the touch pad for the current session (it always came back on reboot). How can I get the original driver back? Failing that, how do I get to the BIOS?

What steps did you take to uninstall/reinstall? If you allowed windows to handle it then there should be no issue, however if you downloaded a driver yourself then you may have problems.

I assume you were able to disable for the current session but this didn't stick after a reboot. (your sentence is ambiguous, please clarify)

    Let windows find it
On my system you press F2 during startup, I'd imagine yours is the same.

    Adjusting Sensitivity

Here's another suggestion if you can't or don't want to disable the touch pad:

The following is for a Win7 OS and assumes you have a Synaptics TouchPad, although I would guess most touch pad makes have similar setting adjustments. You haven't stated which OS (XP or Win&??) you are using but process should be similar for either.

Reduce the sensitivity of the pad:

Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>click on "Mouse" under Devices and Printers; click on Device Settings; make sure your TouchPad is selected in teh Devices box; click on the Settings button; expand the "Pointing" section; expand the "Sensitivity" section; click on "Touch Sensitivity" and in the top right window adjust the sensitivity to your liking. "Light" being very sensitive, "Heavy" being less sensitive.

Or you can adjust the "PalmCheck" settings to basically accomplish the same thing.

See the instructions below the adjustment box for help.

    FN+F9 doesn't work

I don't get ANY of those choices when I go to Control Panel. That'w why I think my driver is corrupt, but I don't know how to fix it. "Let Windows do it ", how do you do that?

Uninstall the driver and reboot the system windows should find new hardware and install the appropriate drivers. Personally I deon't beleive it's a driver issue and disableing via the BIOS may be your best option.

    FN+F9 doesn't work

I know I mentioned in my very first post that I was running Windows 7 Professional.

It looks like I have made some progress. When I clicked devices and printers, only my laser mouse shows up. When I clicked mouse in Control Panel, I could see both mice. Previously, at this point, I uninstalled the driver for the touch pad, but the touch pad came back on the next boot up. This time, I again uninstalled the driver for the touch pad and this time it seems to have worked. I have rebooted twice and the touch pad is still dead. Now when I click on mouse in the Control Panel, I see the dead touch pad but it reports that "this device can not start ". That works for me. If I ever want it back, I suppose there will be a way to bring it back to life.

    Thanks for all your advice.

    Touch Pad Returns

I did at least two reboots without the touch pad coming back to life. This morning, it's back. What next? Tell me again how to do it in the bios. BTW FN+F9 still does not work.

I was finally able to permanently turn off "tapping" on my own. How do I mark this "resolved "?
