Here's what I'm trying to do. I've networked three computers using Cisco Network Pro.
Two snags I'm running into -
    1) I can connect to one of two hp printers from the laptop, but for one I'm being asked to download an '*.inf' file for the hp D4100 series. I've just downloaded a univeral printer driver but this doesn't do the trick. I'm not even sure what is meant by a inf file. Maybe someone can help.

    2) From the Windows XP Desktop, I'm trying to connect also to the D4100 hp but it's asking me for the URL - I'm not sure what to put in here either. The D4100 hp is hooked up to my laptop. But again, I'm at a loss as to what to put in here.

Help would be appreciated - even if you have to make something up!!??!

So you mean, don't post any responses to my query to another forum, correct? Thanks Pete.
Have you any idea as how I can overcome the URL question ...

I moved your thread to the Networking forum because this is a Networking issue - the XP forum has a redirect to your thread here - the thread is no longer in the XP forum.

Networking is not my forte, but you will find that the members who visit this forum are both knowledgeable & helpful :)

D4100 is a Series of Deskjet printers. What's the model # of yours?

This is a D4160. I just overcame part of the snag on the Desktop by inserting the original Printer Disc in and installing the printer on this Desktop. Consequently, I was able to print from another Printer (the D4160) from this Desktop - on the network.
But - I tried to install the D4100 Printer from the disk onto another laptop using vista, and now I cannot install. It's telling me "this system does not meet one or more of the minimum requirements needed to install this product.
It's giving me two options - Run As and Operating System. Neither is working - that is, nothing is allowing me to install the HP Printer onto the Laptop where the OS is Vista.
Now I guess the question would be - why is that, and what can I do to install it.
I'm in Administrator mode on the Vista machine - help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback - I've got the printer installed, but no way can I get it to print. The printer of course is on - no error messages when I try to print from the Laptop. The printer is geared for the network - will work on the hp c3100 series but still a no go on the hp D4160.
If there are any furthered suggestions, please fire them this way.

Actually, the reason I could not get the printer to kick into gear was that there were so many items stored up to be printed, apparently it was ready to go into meltdown.

I cleared everything out of that, and now both printers are working no problem. My last question I suppose, would be - what is the forums' take on the program "Network Magic" ------

There are a few who recommend that Network Magic software.

My opinion: Why use a 3rd party program for features that are already included in the operating system? Most of the time, setting up a network & file sharing is 1-2-3. Same with networked or shared printers.

Now, look at your recent situation with the printers. You could have used such software to set things up. But look at the new found knowledge you now have gained and can apply to similar situations in the future, for yourself and for others!

The software - that little touch of Network Magic saved me a lot of money being spent on Tylenol. I tried for several hours to create a network to the point where I was ready to hurl myself into the side of a slow moving Greyhound Bus.

It was by accident I happened to light upon this Network Magic - consequently three computers are working very happily together and so are the printer(s).

Tony, I say we all have a moment of silence as we honour Network Magic. Indeed!!!
