    Hi.
My girlfriend's, dad's, girlfriend's ( are you still with me ha-ha?) computer was given to me because I have the most knowledge of computers out of all of them. The problem with the computer is that it won't boot up, while booting up it beeps once roughly every 5 seconds, I'll attatch a photo of what it looks like after leaving it try and boot. I'm stumped on this. I don't think it's the hard drive, I cleaned the processor aswell as the whole chasis of dust. I've check for loose plugins, changed power cords, and tried press f12 to get into some options but all it does is beep when I press f12. I'm wondering because of this problem will I still be able to use Knoppix?

-When I press F12 it beeps loudly
    - The beeping that the computer makes on it's own is more of a squeek, or a really scratchy beep.

    Please help!

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

The screen shot says to press F2 not 12 to get into setup..What happens when you press F2?

The screen shot is also telling you it can't find a hard drive with an operating system on it....

Looks like your computer can't detect hard disk.

Remove the hard disk & cdrom cables from motherboard. Then switch it on. If it still beeps, there is some problem with the board itself.

If everything looks ok, connect cdrom & switch it on. If you get beep, problem with cd rom. Connect hard disk & switch on. Keep an eye on the BIOS. You should see the connected cdrom/hdd.

This is what hapend. On boot up I had two options. F12- Beeps, F2- Doesn't beep and doesn't do anything until a few mintes at the previous screen. F2 brings me here.

No one has really given me anything to do. I've tried doing the un-plug, plug thing and it hasn't worked. I want to save EVERYTHING on the hard drive.

Your best bet would be to boot from a Linux Live cd & copy everything you want in a USB drive.

Can you plug the HD into a working computer to see if it will see it? Don't have to mount it, just hang it in there and plug the cables in. Make sure it isn't touching the MOBO.

I would start running the Dell diagnostics software.

Since you indicate that pressing F12 doesn't seem to work, you'll have to download the Dell Diagnostics software, burn it to CD/DVD and set the system to boot off the CD/DVD drive in the BIOS (under System > Boot Sequence).
