    Hello clever people,

I have a problem of having 2 routers but only 1 master socket. This wouldn't be a problem if I had access to master socket all the time.

The problem here is that my roommate has the master socket in his room which I do not always have access to. The other socket is always accessible but does not work if my roommate has his router plugged in whether its turned on or not.

So my question is, is there a way to make sure my router will work in second/slave socket when my roommate decides to be a anti-social and lock his room, switch off the router and sleep leaving me with no internet?

Many many thanks to solutions, suggestions or the like.

P.S. being nice and kissing ass aren't options.

This maybe just the UK, but its basically the primary telephone line socket that connects your house to the main network. Every other socket is just connected to that socket. At least that's how I think it works.

To simplify, I guess you can see the problem as when my flatmate's router is plugged in, mine does not work regardless of whether he switches on his router. So how can I make my one work without unplugging his one. Also, mine definitely works when his is unplugged. I've tried it.

I am assuming that you are using DSL service.

Normally only one DSL modem can be active on one telephone line. So you have the problem. I can't see any way round it except that you take a new line from your telephone company.

As rsinfo said, you can only have one modem connected at a time, however there are other solutions to your problem.

If you post the make and model of both you and your flatmates modems we can give you the best solution for your situation.

Ok both are wireless routers with the 2680 being the better (n), any reason why you can't share a wireless connection?

We can share but sometimes he leaves his one plugged in and switches off the router so then I can't even use my one.

If you share the bill I'd suggest either moving the router to a communal area or reminding him that he is denying you access to services you are paying for.

You could always suggest that you take responsibility and hook the router to your socket though I'd always advise to connect to the primary socket in the property. ADSL can be pernickety and any additional wiring could cause your ISP to wash their hands of any problems.

Would connecting there 2 routers using a cable be of any use when the primary is switched off?

So basically, as long as the primary socket is being used there is nothing I can do?

OK, gonna sound really stupid/desperate now. Are there not cable/adapters that let me split the master socket. like a port which turns one socket to two type of deal?

You are sounding desperate now :)

No, splitters/filters/adapters are to separate the digital signal from the analogue signal, they won't permit two digital devices to be connected together on the same line.

Seriously lokman, you've asked this question in several different ways, the answer will still be the same. I know it's not what you want but your questions have been answered so can I suggest you mark this resolved.

Oh...but what if I connect the 2 routers like extending range. Would my second router cease to work when the first is switched off? If so can I not make the second router the "master" router? >.<

    :bangingheadofabrickwallsmilie: ;)

If the primary is switched off but still connected to the line how do you propose to get a connection :p

Give it up, talk to your flatmate, as the police would say in situations like this it's not a criminal (technical) matter but a civil one.

Very last time then, is it possible to request a second master socket and what would be the effect of this?
