    I cannot bring desktop to top (in front of all other windows) as it can be done in Windows XP. The applications/programmes whose icons are on desktop can be then launched. I have to go to 'Start' and look for the application /programme under 'all programs' and then launch the application /programme.

    Or is it that this feature does not exist in Windows 7. Could someone help me or enlighten me on this.

    Hi again yashpal,

    Your most welcome and thank you for updating your post with outcome. Now that you have also been given instructions on how to mark this post as resolved can you also do this?

    Thanks again. :)

    I've had W7 for almost a year now, and the changing of the desktop icon from previous versions was one thing that really frustrated me.

    I was used to having it on the left side of the taskbar in XP. My cursor is rarely on the right side and to use the default icon in W7 was most unfriendly -- especially when using a touchpad.

    So I found a way of installing another DT icon on the left side, see here: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/get-the-show-desktop-icon-back-in-windows-7-taskbar

    The instructions are a bit involved, but it does work great and made me happy again. :D

    You can still create the exact same "Show Desktop" icon as there is in Windows XP:

    1. Right-click an empty space on your desktop & select New > Text Document
    2. Open the document and copy/paste the following text into the Notepad window:

      [Shell]
      Command=2
      IconFile=explorer.exe,3
      [Taskbar]
      Command=ToggleDesktop

    3. On the File menu, click Save As, and then save the file to your desktop as Show desktop.scf. The Show desktop icon is created on your desktop.
    4. Click and then drag the Show desktop icon to your Quick Launch toolbar

    Now, in Windows 7 you don't have the Quick Launch toolbar showing by default, so you'll have to add it first:

    1. Right-click on an open area of the taskbar, and choose Toolbars \ New Toolbar from the menu.
    2. Paste the following path into the location bar %appdata%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
    3. Press the [Enter] key and click the Select Folder button

    Yup, those appear to be the same instructions (or similar) as on the link I posted. :D

    Okay gentlemen. Since claims are being made, all was included in my link. Poster just had to choose which method he wished to use, to show desktop. Arie has, however, provided instructs that will be in archives when or if the link I provided dies out. I should have done this myself but was to lazy. :)

    Just to clarify: I did read your link before I posted my link.

    For me, the big thing was to get the icon on the left side of the taskbar, and you cannot do that with the standard W7 icon (which your link relates to) as far as I know. :(
