Do any of you encrypt your entire hard drive? If so, does it affect the speed of your computer to perform operations? Are there any disadvantages to encrypting one's hard drive? Having read the current issue of PC World, it strongly recommends we do this and provides a link to a free program: www.truecrypt.org

    Not me.

It shouldn't, provided you have a powerful CPU.

Many. For one you will no longer have access to your data if you loose the encryption key.

I only ever recommend encrypting individual documents or directories to my clients. If the whole drive is encrypted and you need a technician to repair the computer then you must hand over your encryption key(s). And if the key(s) are not backed up to other media, and the disk goes bad or operating system gets corrupted by malware or other causes, then you cannot ever recover the data on the disk.

Thank you, both. I had not considered these issues carefully enough.
