    Hi,
I have a problem with win 7 ultimate, 64 bit. Don't know what caused it
but the entire desktop will not display. When booting a get a normal
boot up screen..then a green screen with a little circular dougnut rotating,
after the circle I get "Preparing your desktop ". After a minute or so of this
a black screen, when only my cursor shows. I hit Ctl\Alt\Del and another green,
normal window appears with the following 1. Lock This Computer, 2. Switch
user, 3. Log Off, 4. Change Password and 5. Start Task Manager. I have one
Icon at the lower right that is sleep, restart, shutdown. I've fought this for
several days but no joy. Have run several malware \virus programs, reinstalled
the OS from a backup. I can run several programs from the "new task" in the
task manager, but not too many..System restore will not run. I've done a
search on this site and the MS tech site and see similar black screen
fixes but they didn't help or I couldn't get them to run..I cannot run regedit.
    Anyone ???

Select the Start Task manager option.

Then click FILE-> New Task and type-> Explorer.exe

You can also run regedit from the New Task (run) in Task Manager.

    How to get desktop display

    STEVE,
I can get explorer and now have a few icons on desktop, but only some run.
I can go to "all Programs" and see my installed programs but only a few will
    run.

    PETE,
I can now get into safe mode but have the same problems as regular mode.

    TONY,
I can now run regedit but don't know where to go from there to get my
regular desktop to come up on boot.

I did try System restore and told there were no restore points(I know
there were but none were brought up).

    TIA

Your user profile is corrupted or else some key Windows system files have been replaced with malicious ones by malware. I suggest you start a new thread in the malware forum here.

I'd first login any way possible and copy wanted files to removable media or other drive, in case a reinstal is required.

    Hi Tony,
    I've went thru the virus/malware removal procedures..nothing.. I've also
reinstalled from two different backup images. These backups were made well
before my current problem..Also reformatted the partition before installing
the backup image. I'm at a loss !!!!
    TIA
