I ran across this article that points to a test by AV Test which puts MSE near the bottom of the list.

Although with your tabloid headline ;) things don't look too good I'll post a couple of points...

    1) Not everyone needs a Jack of all trades, master of none. I have other security measures in place which combined are not as resource hungry as other (lets say) user friendly options.

    2) The results are already out of date (indeed any such research should be out of date within hours of testing).

Guys these are tools to assist your privacy and protection but any tool is only as good as the toolmaster.

No single piece of software is going to protect you from all the bad things out there. A layered approach is the best.

Exactly. Having multiple layers of protection gives you the best chance of being protected. A computer could have the best security software ever made but if the user on the machine isn't aware of how they are browsing the Internet and is just downloading files left and right then the computer has a very high chance of getting infected.

The computers security is only as good as the user operating the machine.

What does this mean please. Does it mean running more than one security software on one computer? (Having multiple layers of protection gives you the best chance of being protected) I have MSE and would like to know what other security software is compatable with MSE?
    Thank you for reading.

Yes, it means running more than one security software on one computer but you must take care that they don't interfere or clash.

I am using Avast Free Antivirus with Immunet & Spyshelter Free. These are the online scanners & free.

On top of that I run Malwarebytes Antimalware & SuperAntispyware weekly.

Your best chance of protection is using your brain. Know what you are doing!

Just for FUN I installed an Anti-Virus some years ago. In all those years it has never given me a warning..... ever.

    But then I

    • Open attachments only from an extremely limited group of people
    • Delete all email I get that tells me I have to go & see this, click that
    • Don't install any facebook apps
    • Keep Windows, Java and all other software updated with the latest patches
    • Don't use P2P software
    • Only use original software, no 'cracked' versions

Sometimes I have to test some links that I know will probably be infected or attempt to infect me, but I do this using a VM. The security on my VM has a few layers and has thwarted some attempts at infecting my VM.

Crucial! I always tell my clients/friends to disable all but the stock Facebook apps.

    As for the antivirus review:

It appears that Security Essentials got is low rating because of how fast its new definitions can detect the most recent threats. AFAIK, MS uses its own "cloud base" of threats/reports rather than utilize 3rd party clouds.

I agree with you. The best chance you have is to know what you are doing. And if you don't know what to do, then ask someone who does know. Like if you have a question with cloud hosting, you go to the cloud hosting leaders, not a mom and pop computer shop.
