Why does windows (and Mac OS for that matter) insist on shoving cleartype down our throats?? Its blurry, its hard to read, it does not look nicer - not even on the flatscreens they were intended for.

On top of that, if windows enabled cleartype looks at a website that already encorporates its own cleartype (facebook), it is TWICE as blurry!!

Can we just get rid of this stuff once and for all? or, at the very least, make it an OPTION???

Its integrated into windows 7 - which i had to hack into to turn it off - shouldnt be necessary. and now its integrated into IE9 with NO option to turn it off!! Why??

Until it becomes an option i have downgraded.

I just need to know if anyone shares this frustration with me, if anyone else prefers the original pixelated fonts (The way they were intended), if it will ever become an option again?? Surely i am not the only one with this complaint. Windows supposidly cares about all its customers - so make this an option. in the entire operating system and the browsers.

(for those wondering, yes i tried the tool to calibrate your fonts, but it still didnt take away cleartype entirely. it just intensified it, or made it slightly better but not entirely. as a last resprt i risked messing up my entire system and changed something in the registry. Thankfully it worked- but really should that be necessary to turn something off? really??).

There's no need to hack anything to turn it off in Win 7. You do have the option. Click start and in the search box type fonts. Then, in the list that pops up, select "adjust cleartype settings ". Uncheck the line there that says turn on cleartype. Is that the setting you said you tried? If so, it should turn it off. Does mine.

FWIW, I much prefer using cleartype. I've never had it cause anything to be blurry. It's much clearer when I use it. Can't stand the old way. I guess it's a different strokes for different folks thing. :)

Yep, i remember trying that too. It worked for some areas but not all if i remember right. But even with the registry adjustment my taskbar is still cleartyped, and the names on the windows themselves. Theres just no avoiding it anymore...

For me anyway, i already have some vision problems, so the more pixelated and pure the better, for me.

its just really frusterating that its become no option anymore (IE9 - and likely all future products). I know some people like it, some people dont care/notice, but theres lots that dont like it. We need the option.

unfortunately i cant change sites that have the cleartype option programmed into them already, theres no way to change the site coding on my end.

To disable Cleartype in IE9, check via regedit if this value exists, then change it to "no ".

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
    "UseClearType "= "yes "

Also, check if similar key exists at HKLM...

User specific and preference. For me Cleartype actually smooths out the text makes it clearer and less blurry. Go figure.

    Clear Type

Hi, I was looking at Mel post, may be Mel was referring to transparency instead of clear type. Go to control panel/appearance and personalization/personalization/change window glass color/uncheck enable transparency/save changes.

Thanks Gaston. I was having the same problem as Mel. I wish that I had read this sooner. It would have saved me a lot of stress!
