I had a 3 yr old Laptop hp compaq C776NR notebook. It just stop working,no power, like a fuse is out.The shop I took it to,said it was a mother board. So I replaced it with hp compaq CQ56 notebook about two weeks ago.I was wondering if first it does have fuse on the mother board, or can I just take out the harddrive, and put it into my new computer.I had everything saved to a disk off the old computer about a week before it quit.I asked the shop can I just put the disk into my new computer to get all my files, and he said that he would not do that! The old computer used Vista and the new is window 7.THX

Regarding your old laptops fault, there really isn't enough information but no it won't be a fuse.

Swapping the drives will cause nothing but anguish, best bet is to get an external case and using the old HD in that.

etap, please keep replies to the forum rather than PM, it may help others with similar questions.

for the benefit of others, sent via PM

Yes you can use the second drive as D:\, regarding the machine shutting down it probably just went to sleep due to lack of use.

If you're happy please mark your thread as 'Resolved'.

One last question about adding that extra drive

I've read on some computers, there is a compartment in the computer to put the second drive. Than I found out that I could remove the CD drive, and put it in place of that, which I don't use alot. What about a cable to just plug into my USB port from the second drive.THX again for your opinion.

As I said earlier your best bet is an external enclosure, this will connect via USB.

If you go this route be sure to get a powered case as USB ports have minimal power ability.

That is really only for emergencies, like taking off your data. You will curse when you need to run a CD (or is it also DVD?).

I agree with wildfire, find a place for the old drive, where it is easily accessible. If you copy off all the data you want, then you can turn it into a backup drive.

Back up your data, then it doesn't matter what happens to the system/hardware.

That is a viable solution. It would be similar to this. But you would still need power and note this one is for IDE (PATA) drives. If yours is an SATA, you will need the appropriate cables. The advantage of an enclosure is the drive is physically protected in the enclosure - obviously the enclosure would have to be the right type too.

    A 3rd alternative is a docking station.
