    Hello Everyone!

I recently tried to open a file and was told to choose a programme to open it as it could not be opened.

    I chose adobe reader.

I was then informed that it could not be opened with that programme, and to choose another - or go online to get web diagnosis.

In the meantime, all my icons had changed to Adobe Reader and would not function as a shortcuts any more.

I tried re-starting the pc but this did not work.

I then, for want of a better idea, did a system restore to a previous date.
This restored all the icons. They now work as shortcuts.

My question is this - Is there a better/easier way of doing this, if it happens again, without doing a System Restore, as a restore seems a bit drastic!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Regards,

    colinito.

    Hi colinito,

I won't comment on your particular issue as I don't know what happened but can I ask...

Why do you think a System Restore is a bit drastic:confused: It does what it says on the tin, restores your system to a previously working state!

EDIT: For beginners we're talking system restore here. Not a factory recovery or repair install.

    Thanks, Wildfire,

The issue was a file I had in my documents file that, for some reason, I could not open by double-clicking. It had contained some stored Jazz data that I wished to access. I cannot explain why it had become 'unopenable' and, having failed to open it, as I stated in my original post, I removed it to the recycle bin and did a restore.

I agree and understand your comments and that is why I restored to an earlier date.

However, the "cause" was pretty instantaneous and I was hoping that there was a quicker or "better" way of achieving this.

    regards

    colinito.
