Lately, no matter what I Search for it always ends up at some point by "Not Responding" regardless of whether it found any listings or not using XP-Pro SP3. I have to End Task to clear it. I ran all the usual Vipre AV, MalewareBytes etc. but it din't help.

    How can I fix?

Have you cleaned temp folders and done a disc cleanup with ALL the boxes checked and a DeFrag lately?

    Mr. Bill,

    Thanks for the info.
I recently ran Speed Disk and I just ran IE Delete and CCleaner with all boxes checked.
I ran a simple search of a file name in the C:\ directory and it found it ok but when I searched for a more embedded file in Content.IE5 it locked up again.

I'll run a few more and see how it goes.

You don't have more than one antimalware suite running at the same time, do you? You have more than one installed, but the rest need to be disabled from running in the background, then you run manual scans when you might feel it is necessary.

Run Error Checking (CHKDSK) on your drive or drives. Set it to fix errors automatically and do a scan of the disk surface. It will take a few hours, set it up to run overnight.

    Thanks guys,

I only loaded Norton/SW utilities, got rid of their junky AV a long time ago so there's no conflict. Vipre AV is far superior and highly rated.

Good idea on CHKDSK. I'll run it tonight.

I deleted IE and re-downloaded IE8 and everything works fine.

Glad that everything is working fine for you. Thanks for posting what fixed the problem.

You can't delete IE of any version. All you can do is update it, roll it back or don't use it at all.

    Mr. Bill,

I removed IE8 which was probably corrupted and it reverte to IE6 and then I reloaded IE8.

Did you ever install 7 on there? Sounds like maybe you didn't because it went to 6. Usually goes back to the last version that was on there. Oh well, at least you got it fixed now. You need to get Win 7 so you can have fun with the rest of us with IE9. LOL

Still on XP-Pro/IE8 which is fine for now. I prefer being a "late" adopter.

I used to be the same way. Went years before I upgraded to XP from 98SE. After I bit the bullet, I kicked myself for not doing it earlier. :D
