    Hi all,

I've been having some problems after trying to, and aborting, "ByteScout XLS Viewer" installation.

Admin: Don't post HJT logs here. They have no use and can't be used in tracking down your problem.

jpChris, I see you posted in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum already and it doesn't look like you have any infections.

I looked at your hijackthis log and didn't see anything that requires fixing.

But I did notice that your computer is still running SP2. You should upgrade to Service Pack 3 in order to keep your computer secure. I would also recommend that you install Internet Explorer 8 since Internet Explorer 7 isn't a very secure browser either.

Also what is the exact error message with the program that you are trying to install?

    Hi Evan,

Yes, I posted in the other forum, but broni told me to post it here.

Also, there's a couple of things (the R1's; 02 - BHO RealPlayer; and 023 - Gear [and maybe a couple more]) that look like they shouldn't be there.

And, since I don't know if they should be there or not, that's why I'm asking.
If I use IE more than 5 or 6 times a year I'd be surprised.
No error message, it's just that "Bytescout" wanted to install 4 or 5 programs in addition to the XLS viewer that I didn't want, didn't need, and couldn't use. Even aborting the install left behind about 30 entries in the registry.

    So, what now?

If you don't use Real Player you can uninstall it from Add/RemovePrograms. The GEAR security service can be disabled if you don't use it.

Can you install the Bytescout XLS viewer and uncheck all of the other bundled software that you don't want?

No — that's why I aborted the install — it was either install all the programs or abort. However, it did tell me that if I didn't want the apps I could always go to Add\Remove and uninstall, but that'd leave too much c**p behind and I'd have to go back and uninstall Toolbars, Search bars, etc., etc., ad nauseam.

I do use RealPlayer very infrequently, and that's just to download a video that I then convert to MP3, WMA or whatever.

I've Googled and I'm still unsure of Gear. I did have DriveImage7 at one time, but it was extreme brain damage trying to get that turkey off my system. With a few clicks, XXClone did it better, easier and faster than DI7.

    jpChris,
I took the liberty to change your thread title to be a bit more descriptive of the problem.

Since you don't use Real Player very often then you can remove the BHO in Internet Explorer.

With the ByteScout XLS vewier maybe there is a lighter version of the program that doesn't include all of the crapware that is bundled with it.

If you need to use the program and you have to install the crapware then I would use a program like revo uninstaller to clean out the system of the junk programs that were installed.

Actually, I don't have any problem with the program because, as I said, I aborted the install because of all the c**pware that came with it. Also, two of the apps that came with it (and I didn't install) showed up in the registry anyway.

And as far as removing my HJT log, I originally posted in the Malware Forum and broni told me to post it here so someone could take a look at it and see if there was anything left behind that I don't know about that needed removing: Hence the post and request for review; I have no problem with the program.

    @ Evan,

Thanks. Since there isn't anything really wonky with the HJT log except for a couple of minor things, I don't have to worry. And as far as REVO'ing the junk programs, I'd rather not waste my time with any program that foists so much junk on the user.

The way I see this issue, you have 3 choices.

    1. Install ByteScout XLS Viewer and then remove the crapware using a program such as Revo Uninstaller. (You stated above that you don't want to waste your time removing junk programs, if that is the case take a look at choice 2)

    2. Search for a version of ByteScout XLS Viewer that doesn't include the bundled crapware in the installer such as a portable version as an example. (If there is no such version available then you may have to look at choice 3)

    3. Use a different XLS Viewer that performs that same functions as the program that you wanted to install.

Let me know what you want to do and we'll go from there. Also if you have any other questions about other programs you can let me know as well. :)

Best way to remove most traces of it will be to use System Restore.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for the responses.

@ Evan: This is the first time I've needed XLS since W98; and it was on a Gov't page (everyone else uses PDF). So, since I'll probably not need it again for a long time, I'd like to have one "just in case" that has a small footprint. So let's go with #3. Ideas?

@ PeteC: The MS version is 74MB and the "other one" is only 450kb; that's why I went with it — smaller footprint. I just want a down-'n-dirty program (like FoxIt).

@ Arie: I did do a System Restore to five days prior to this PITA (before my original post) and it's still in the registry!

OK - I see where you are coming from - your hard drives are miniscule cf modern drives :) You call as always!

Normally I would not reccomend a Registry cleaner, but on this occasion it may be beneficial ...

Run jv16Powertools - 60 day fully functional free trial and Find in Registry 'bytescout' - back up keys when prompted and then delete.

    Hi Pete,

I have JV16 and searching for bytescout only turned up in two places: Registered File Types (.xls viewer), and Shell Extensions (which just points to the folder where I have the .exe file).

However, when I search the registry there's at least 4 folders and twenty entries elsewhere.

So, export one at a time (from the registry), delete, and every couple of days (if'n all's well) do the next one until all mention is gone?

I'm surprised that jv16 did not turn up all the entries, but .....

Your cautious approach is to be commended :), but time consuming. I would back up the registry - I use ERUNT to back up mine as a scheduled task daily - and then go for it - export and delete the lot ....
I cannot see that any of those entries would cause issues elsewhere - given that you check each one first and any that you are unsure of - leave for the time being.

    Your call :)

    Hi Pete,

I forgot I had ERUNT. I think I'll do as you suggested — ERUNT the registry, export, delete and keep my finger crossed (the other four are busy typing) that I don't get a non-boot like I did the first time.

    Thanks.
