PS/2 keyboard fails to start (Code 10)

I have read as much as I can and I can't seem to find a logical solution to this problem. I have no idea what happened but starting one day suddenly my keyboard quit working.

I have tried updating and reinstalling drivers in hardware devices and I have tried plugging in a p2 mouse but I can't seem to get this to work. Any help would be appreciated.

I have tried in that past few days to search a out a thread that might already have addressed this issue and just now tried to double check again but received and error in the search section and then reported it.

 

Have you tried a different keyboard?

And at any point have you connected/disconnected the PS/2 devices (I'm assuming mice as well) whilst the PC was powered up (USB devices are hot pluggable, PS/2 aren't and can cause damage if connected whilst PC is powered).

If the above doesn't fit with your issue try a system restore to a point before you had this problem. Otherwise we may be looking at reinstalling M/Board/chipset drivers, please complete your system details. to help us help you.

 

Ok, I updated all my system information to the best of my knowledge and set it to display. This computer has been modified several times but started out as an HP, I would imagine that there is almost nothing left that was HP. I didn't know how to find the exact model of my mother board and I couldn't find any information about my power supply.

I have tried another keyboard however don't I have a usb keyboard to try. I still have full function of my mouse and yes I did unplug and plug the P2 keyboard while the PC was on unfortunately.

I would attempt system restore, however the only restore point I have was set after this occurred.

I take it we are moving on to updating the chipset drivers?

 

SIW (referred to in my previous link) should supply that information.

I'd think not though there's no harm in trying, update your system details using SIW and we'll take a look.

I am however thinking a damaged motherboard (don't connect/disconnect peripherals when the PC and/or they are powered). Fortunately it only appears that the PS/2 port is faulty. A USB keyboard should work OK.

 

Wow I can't believe I didn't see the link for SIW, unbelievable. The exact model of the mother board has been updated.

I have a usb keyboard on the way, though I'm not sure, it could be for a mac, will that even work?

I should mention that the keyboard works during the boot up process and can navigate bios. I didn't remove the keyboard while the PC was on until recently, how much damage could it have done, should I be worried?

After going back and reading my first post I realize I was not giving you enough information, I apologize. I will attempt to update the chipset now.

Nice. Well I'm having a little trouble finding the right driver. I went to the abit site and searched for the kn9 model, but I'm not sure if the results of the search are offering the correct drivers.

When I attempt to install the driver I downloaded a prompt asking "do you want to remove the selected application and all of it's features?" Could this be because I already have it installed?

 

Try this one, scroll down to the bottom and select the nForece500 Series Chipset Driver for 2000/XP/2003

Ok, downloaded and installed the Nvidia driver you suggested. The Nvidia driver didn't help. Any other ideas of what might be causing this? Enjoy your games Who's your team?

 

Just buzzing by and thought I 'd throw about a tenth of a cents worth in here as follows:

Bios setting? for legacy, usb, or ps2. I also believe I previous read that your bios will allow for the setting of 'bios or software" control. Perhaps exploration in this area will hep.

Personal experiences:
Once a while back I had an odd computer that would not function with a certain keyboard and mouse combination unless I reversed the mouse and keyboard plugin. Odd, but it worked.

Also had some particular brand of a keyboard that worked with all computers in the house except this fussy computer. it just plain seem to be particular.

I did see the Legacy, USB, PS2 setting but honestly didn't know enough about the setting to change it. I did try to change the keyboard setting to bios but got no result.

Earlier I plugged a mac usb keyboard in and the computer identified it but still, I can't type with it. I plugged the mac keyboard into my laptop that is also windows and it worked so I'm not really sure what's happening.

This whole thing just happened over night, it worked and the next day it didn't.

 

OK with no USB keyboard either it's looking like an OS issue, do you have an XP CD available to do a repair install?

EDIT: Does your keyboard work in Safe Mode (since you can access the BIOS you should also be able to access the startup menu-tap away with F8 whilst the system is booting).

 

I looked again and couldn't find the legacy,usb,ps2 again. I couldn't remember where I found it.

Unfortunately I haven't had my xp disc since I originally bought this machine as an HP. The place I bought this machine from had everything already installed and as far as I can remember I never had one.

Is there a way for me to copy xp from my machine?

If I remember correctly the keyboard didn't work in safe mode either, but I will give it another shot. I've tried so many things I can keep track of what all I've done.

Hi Gideon, I have a comp with Abit M/B and in BIOS did you find USB in Integrated Peripherals?

Mine shows USB Controller > All Enabled
USB Keyboard Support > OS

If you have the option to change - use Page Up & Page Down keys.
Hope this helps.

As Wildfire has stated - NEVER unplug connectors unless they are USB and if it's a Flash Drive - always click on Icon on Task bar (Safe Remove Hardware) as pulling Flash Drive out of USB plug may lose all your drive info.

Always Shut down your comp to change any Serial Plugged Hardware and it pays to switch off Power to the M/B if you have a switch on the PSU.

Thanks for the input Regarding BIOS settings that's certainly an option (but in my experience unlikely (this is PS/2 not USB))

Sorry, now I'm at a loss I cannot understand why your keyboard would work at the BIOS level but not work when selecting startup menu options (this is a minuscule step up from BIOS).

I've asked for further input from others to look into this. Please be patient.

So thus far, you've tried both a USB and PS/2 keyboard and neither of them have worked. Interesting. If I didn't know better, I'd say you have some sort of a virus/malware infestation but that is just a hypothesis.

Have you looked in the device manager to see if there are any yellow exclamation marks? Look under the 'Keyboard' listing...Similarly you will see a red 'X' if something is disabled in the device manager. At the run command line type 'devmgmt.msc' (no quotes) to open it.

I was going to suggest a complete format & reinstall but without an XP installation CD, that is not going to be possible. Take a look in the device manager first. Then try booting up in "Last known working configuration "; this is specifically for hardware changes. Press F8 while booting up & you'll see your choices.

 

While I don't want to muddy the water on help that may be more knowledgeable than myself I think I should say that this may be an abit bios bug of some sort, I did look up and read quite a few similar issues reported by abit comp users who have had the same issue. Some fixed it via some bios setting, some updated bios via flash (not for beginner) Some noted that they needed either usb keyboard and mouse or ps2 keyboard and mouse but not mixed (1usb and other ps2) and finally 1 in particular commented that if he booted with nether connected and then connected, once os was loaded, they worked.

You may need to find a forum specifically for abit issues and post for help on this problem.
