I am connected to my son's printer ( it's in another room) and used it w/o problems until it suddenly became "offline ". I checked for new drivers and other diagnostics for this printer (HP 2800 series) and all seems well. But I can't find any way to get back online with my computer. Will be grateful for any advice. Thanks.

Sounds awfully like a networking issue to me.

I can't help much with this Denis, but by answering a couple of questions it may help more knowledgeable people to assist.

    How is the printer connected?

If connected to your son's computer, is that switched on when you are trying to print?

If connected via a print server, can you access the rest of the network (eg shared folders etc).

Either way, does your son have issues printing?

BTW Please complete your system details. it helps us to answer your queries.

WILDFIRE: Many thanks for the prompt reply. To answer your Q's in sequence:
    1. Printer and my computer connected by cable.
    2. Yes. Everything is on.
    3. Not connected to a server. Just a direct cable connection to printer.
    4. Intel core (TM) 2 Duo CPU EE8400@3.00GHz 4.00GB 64-bit op syst. (I filled out BBS form earlier but it required information I didn't know. I am a beginner w/computers)

    Cancel all existing print jobs.
    Turn off printer.
    Turn on printer.
May or may not have to reboot comp.

Offline printers are usually the result of printer errors or network errors (failed connectivity to the share or IP address issues with print server).

If a shared printer is the only one on your system, be sure to set it as the default printer.

TonyT: Thanks for the guidance. I did all of the above but still offline. I ran the printer diagnostic and it said problem can't be fixed and I should contact the administrator. Would this be my son whose printer it is? Is the probldm at his end? Incidentally, my computer and his printer are in adjoining rooms not 25 feet apart.

Using 25 feet of USB cable is inviting trouble. Bring down the printer to your room & connect with standard length USB cable. If it prints allright, its a cable issue.
