When I buy my new computer, I plan to choose between Windows 7 Home or Professional. I have several programs I use on my XP machine that I need to work on my new computer. These programs aren't listed on the Windows 7 Compatibility page. From reading the sticky about which version of 7 to choose, am I correct in that if I buy Professional, these programs will work on my new computer?

    Thanks.

If you'd give us the names of the programs, we might be able to help.

Most software is either compatible or has an upgrade/patch available for download or can be run in "XP Compatible Mode. "

Windows 7 Professional and above will run Windows XP Mode which is a free download from MS and includes a free copy of XP Pro.

XP is run in a virtual machine and programs which run on XP will run in XP Mode. However you should be aware that the Virtual XP uses virtual hardware - that is your graphics card will be replaced in XP mode by a virtual card so don't expect gaming performance in this mode :)

When running the virtual XP you have access to all the drives on the host computer.

I use it to good effect with Quicken 2000 which will not load to my 7 Pro x64 computer and runs poorly on my 7 Pro x32 laptop.

I also have 15 year old programs which run perfectly on 7 such as Lotus Organizer.

The full list of compatible programs is given here .....

Windows 7 Professional does have XP Mode, Location Aware Printing and the Aero features (Shake, Snap, Themes) and has a bit of everything from the other iterations of Windows 7. You can check out some of the features here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/business/windows-7-test-drive/
