    Using Windows 7 Office 2003.
Trying to use the contents hyperlink and I get this:

"The operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. "
    I am the system administrator!
The same thing happens in Office 2010.

Where do I go to lift this (these) restriction(s)?:(

This is an "˜old chestnut’ that continually crops up, I think it started with Win98 or certainly WinXP. Go to Control Panel > Default Programs > Set your default programs > Click Custom, select Internet Explorer and click Set this program as default.

    Windows 7 & Word 2003

Thanks BurrWalnut but the problem is actually to do with WORD 2003. I cannot use the TOC because of the statement which keeps appearing. I want to know where to go to remove the restriction.

    BurrWalnut has the answer.

You didn't by chance install & then remove Google Chrome?

I certainly did install - didn't like - and uninstalled Google Chrome. What has this to do with it?

BurrWalnutt seems to be on the same tack but following his instructions as closely as I can in Windows 7 (it's different to XP) didn't seem to make any difference - the problem is still there.

I am using Office 2003 with Win 7 and it works without error in hyperlinks and TOC.

I have installed and uninstalled Chrome.

My suggestion would be to uninstall (repair) Office 2003.

    Hi rexr,

Since I have both Office 2003 and 2010, the situation exists in both. I have kept 2003 whilst I get to grips with 2010.

I will try your remedy though and see what happens. I cannot uninstall and reinstall 2010 though, as it came with the laptop and no disk.

    Thank you for the suggestion

Everything! It i a known problem caused by Chrome.

Open the registry editor (type regedit in Windows 7 Start Search box and press [Enter]), select Edit > Find and search for the Value nocontrolpanel.

When found, change its value from 1 to 0.

    Next go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Classes \ htmlfile \ shell \ open \ command

Make sure the (default) entry (String Value) lists "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

    Thank you Arie,
Did all that - the only thing needing a change was the value of nocontrolpanel from "no value set" to "0 ".
The other default value read as you said it should, however...
Even after both a "soft" reboot (restart) and a "hard" reboot (turn off - wait - turn on) the problem still persists in both Word 2003 & 2010.
    What else should I try?

    Got this solution from:

    http://www.slipstick.com/problems/link_restrict.htm#reg2

"If you received this error after uninstalling any application that takes over the HTML open command (including, but not limited to, Chrome & Firefox browsers) you may also need to change the HTM/HTML association in the registry.

1.Start, click Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2.Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html
3.Right click the value for the .html key and select Modify...
4.Change the value from "ChromeHTML" to "htmlfile" (or from FireFoxHTML to htmlfile)
Repeat these steps for htm and .shtml keys if they exist. You may also want to check the xhtml and xhtm keys. "

    IT WORKED!! Yippee

    Thanks Pete C,

By now you'll have seen that I had found it - as usual, AFTER I sent the help message.

    Thanks for your input though.

    Tom
