I renamed two desktop icons and now they show white with a fold at top and shortcut arrow. Is there a fix for this in windows 7? The desktop icons are for jv powertools and acronis.

Got a few ideas. Here are 5 off the top of my head.

1>For at least one of these you could try a rightclick on blank area of desktop and chose "undo rename "

2>refresh desktop. (F5 on keyboard) or (right click option>refresh)

    3>reboot

4>Do the shortcuts work? Use them.

5>right click them, from properties, choose to open folder location and recreate the shortcuts. All do-able via right click options.

    1. When I Rclick a blank area of desktop I do not have the option to undo rename.

    2. refreshed desktop with Rclick refresh

    3. rebooted- didn't fix it

    4. Yes the shortcuts work

    5. Recreating shortcuts resulted in shortcuts that appear the same as the ones I have right now. Picture below.

That worked for me a while back.
It was an Icon in the Start Menu though.

Evan I tried the first link in your post and it worked! Thanks. I left it as read only and checked hidden and ready for archiving. Is that okay? Or should I be unchecking read only?

The iconcache file will be recreated regardless of whether you set it to read-only or not. But if the original file was read-only then I would set the new iconcache file as read-only as well.

I honestly can't remember if it was read only or not now. I should write these things down. It won't let me change it anyway. When I click on the read only box and it goes from a blue to clear colour, apply ok and go back in, it's read only. Do I need to worry about this read only?

No. Did you reboot the computer and is your problem fixed? If your issue is fixed then I wouldn't worry about it.
