Unfortunately the maximum memory is only 1GB.

You'd be better getting a new system...

Here in Scotland we have a saying, Don't burn good money after bad...

Also SHUCKS, don't chastise the messenger.

If your PC does what you want it to do then fair enough, but if you need a little more engine power, get rid and buy appropriate equipment.

Seriously DPI, there's always ways and means but is it worth it?

Good site to go to. Works with all PC's. Just run the scan tool and it will tell you lots of info about your ram.

    www.crucial.com

I typed in your system and here is the result.

Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

Yeppers. The 4550 I'm typing on now has 1.5 gigs and will take up to TWO like Bill posted.

So may be it can take more, but in the manual it clearly says 1GB maximum memory. Perhaps I miss read it and that actually means 1 GB per slot:confused:

Did you do anything besides just putting the memory in the slots? like updating bios etc.DPI.

I forgot that I did this for a neighbor. Just replaced his 2 256 sticks with 2 1Gb sticks and did nothing else.

I added 1G of memory in each slot but, when I run SIW it displays memory as 512M in each slot. Any ideas? DPI.

Well, I know others here have said they are running the same model with more memory installed but the scan with SIW tends to confirm that it can only use a maximum of 512MB in each slot totalling 1GB. And that is exactly what the manual says. 1GB is not much use for gaming but for general use it is fine, you would notice very little difference if you were able to upgrade to 2GB.

How much memory is reported on POST, in the BIOS or in Computer Properties?

Steve may well have the same model but a different spec. I came across a member here needing help with a Dell laptop he had bought a new screen for but it was the wrong one. His laptop (owned from new) had an LED screen but in the manual it was an LCD screen. Dell insisted it was the correct screen for that model but clearly that was not the case.

In conclusion, it would not be the first time Dell have changed the spec on the same model of PC, but choose not to change the model number. I would guess that a number of the 4550 PC's had an improved MOBO that could take more RAM.

The attached pic from SIW says the Max Cap is 1 gig...But it also says two slots:confused:

Windows also reports the same 1.5 gigs...
