This was a problem submitted 2 years ago. I have the same problem but I have the Pro edition SP2 that it's asking for but it still won't accept it. I read the links provided but that's not going to help because of the above. Any solutions? I'm a newbie on this forum. Thanks for any help provided.

Hello, breeze. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

Could we have some more background information? What specific discussion are you referring to from 2 years ago?

Why are you trying to run SFC?

What specific error messages do you see (and when do you see them)?

When you installed Windows, is the XP Pro SP2 version CD you're using with SFC the same one you used to install Windows with?

When you run SFC and it prompts for your XP Pro SP2 CD, are you inserting the CD in the same drive (with same letter designation) you used to install Windows?

Hi Breeze71, The easiest way to run SFC /scannow is to copy i386 folder from your XP CD and install C:\i386. go to RUN > Regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
Locate SOURCEPATH. Where it has an entry looking for your CD-ROM drive, change it to C:\
I've done this on all our home computers and if I need to do a system file check, it works every time without problem. Cheers Neil.:D

Thanks guys for the welcome. I'm going to go with Neil right now because his suggestion is easier. Otherwise my trying to explain everything will be involved. Neil, since there's already i386 folders in different areas of my computer, will installing a complete separate i386 folders cause any confliction problems? I've copied the folder over to C: into it's own separate folder but haven't changed the registry yet. If Neil's method doesn't work I'll post back and explain to mailman and whiskeyman. :D I just got a warning saying that it can't copy a file from the source disk and quit. I'll wait for a reply and then I'll post back again.

The bottom line to keep this short is, I've tried everything mentioned here and elsewhere and nothing, zilch, 0. I don't know why something wouldn't work but it didn't. I now have a splitting headache from information overload. 2 Tylenol should do the trick. I agree with mailman that what I wanted to do serves no purpose. Microsuck has stuck it to me again. Why have SFC if you can't get it to work ? Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Hi Arie, Already tried that, in fact twice. One problem is my CD write is down so I went into the registry and changed it to drive E:\ for my flash drive and it was working fine and then the same prompt. So I quit. I also tried several other suggestions and no luck. Thanks.

    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Setup

Right-click the 'folder' Setup, and from the menu choose Export. Give the file a name, and in Save as type choose Text Files (*.txt), click Save.

Copy/Paste the text in your next reply.

Arie, I didn't add this since I was giving up. I bought this PC off of Ebay used several years ago so I don't have the original OS CD. I bought a new reinstall CD SP2 a few days ago not knowing it wasn't going to work. but I can reinstall if I so choose. With a fresh install I can install SP3. Can't install SP3 on a computer being used this long. I've learned a lot in the past couple of weeks. Info overload. I've been brought up that if it's not broke, don't fix it. I don't think companies especially Microsucks has learned this among some other things MS is doing that is causing the consumer/owner loss of choice. Just thought you should know about my computer.

You are missing the enty for ServicePackSourcePath

    Copy this:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]
     "ServicePackSourcePath "= "%windir%\\ServicePackFiles "

in a text file, then rename it source.reg. Double click the file & allow it to add the information to your registry. Reboot.

Hi breeze71, Sorry I didn't get back to answer your question.

I have carried out the process on all our Home PC's including my laptop, and I always go to Windows Update to get the latest KB's before I use sfc /scannow. It has worked every time without problems.

I followed the info posted here:http://www.updatexp.com/ courtesy of Marc Liron.

I would advise you to follow Aries advice at the moment and let us know how you get on. Cheers Neil.

Arie and RL, Here's what I did. I copied the path on NotePad and then put the file on C: Here's what I got in a message box:
Cannot import C:\source.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.
    What did I do wrong?
If all else fails, use Update and will that absolutely solve the problem? I've read Marc Liron's searching for solutions for XP in the past.
What would have caused the source path entry not to be in the registry in the first place?
    Thanks for the continued help.

Try changing the content of the file to this:

    Code:
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]
     "ServicePackSourcePath "= "%windir%\\ServicePackFiles "

Make sure that Word Wrap is not selected in Notepad.

Arie, I did as directed and it accepted the file into the registry. I tried SFC again and it asked me for the same CD. I used the one I bought but it didn't work. The way I'm understanding this from what I've read is that if you don't have the original CD that came with the OS, SFC won't work. It won't accept files from an installation CD which is what I have/bought. But I'm not an expert like you so I don't know of other methods other than what is suggested by you/others. The one good thing coming from this for me is that I'm learning more and adding that to my knowledge base. The bad thing is having you take up your time. I'm ready to pull the plug whenever you are. And I want to thank you again.

I also want to let you know that I haven't used Update for a long time and have my reasons why. From what RL said below, it probably isn't helping find a solution or correct the problem.

Ok, Arie. Thanks for trying. We'll just consider this closed. I learned a lot from this. I can always wipe and reinstall if need be. Take care.
